Bakersfield Condors News Release
Hofstrand Doubles Up on San Diego in 4-1 Victory Condors pick up 2nd straight win heading into All-Star Break SAN DIEGO, Calif., - Mike Hofstrand recorded his first multi-goal performance of the season as the Bakersfield Condors defeated the San Diego Gulls by a score of 4-1 at the iPayOne Center.
Bakersfield was outshot for most of the first 13 minutes, but connected as Nick Economakos placed a forehand pass onto the stick of Jason Norrie in the slot. Norrie turned a shot on net, and Mike Hofstrand deposited the rebound under the crossbar with 6:17 remaining in the period.
The Condors doubled their lead 78 seconds later when Scott Borders fired a slapshot from the right point. Joel Irving deflected the shot and tapped it past San Diego netminder Tom Lawson to give Bakersfield a 2-0 lead with 5:35 remaining in the first period.
Following a carryover penalty to Scott Balan from the first period and a Scott Basiuk infraction early in the second, the Gulls converted a 5-on-3 power play when Pierre-Luc Sleigher pushed a high wrist shot over Ryan Munce's left shoulder just 70 seconds into the second period.
With over six minutes remaining in the period, Oriel McHugh fired a slap shot from the far point and Mike Hofstrand angled a deflection over Lawson's left shoulder. Nick Economakos assisted as the Condors took a 3-1 lead with 6:03 left in the game. An empty net goal by Oriel McHugh sealed the victory for Bakersfield and put the game at 4-1.
Ryan Munce earned the victory, stopping 37 of 38 Gulls shots. Tom Lawson was credited with the loss, making 18 saves on 21 shots faced.
Other notes: The victory was only the Condors' seventh win ever at the iPayOne Center. Oriel McHugh's empty netter was his first goal since the season opener versus Victoria on October 22nd.
The All-Star Break and two games in Salt Lake City against the Utah Grizzlies take place before the Condors return home on January 31st to host the Alaska Aces. That evening, all college and high school students receive admission for $1.00 by presenting their student ID courtesy of the WB-12 and 106.1 KRAB Radio.
