Stanley Cup Coming To San Diego Friday
January 23, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The Stanley Cup, hockey's most coveted trophy, will be on display Friday at the ipayOne Center when the San Diego Gulls take on the visiting Stockton Thunder. All fans are invited to take their picture with the Cup and donate to the hurricane relief efforts.
From 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. the Stanley Cup will be displayed on the ipayOne Center's outer concourse. Just before game-time (7:05 p.m.) there will be a special on-ice pre-game ceremony with the Cup and San Diego's own Willie O'Ree, the first African-American to ever play in the NHL.
During the game, the Stanley Cup will be back on the outer concourse and will then be taken down to the Arena Club for 30 minutes upon the game's completion.
Fans will be able to have their pictures taken with the Stanley Cup and donate to the hurricane relief efforts. A Gulls photographer will also be on site to take pictures of those fans who do not have a camera. There will be a $10 fee to those who want their picture professionally developed and printed by the Gulls photographer. Those proceeds will also benefit the hurricane relief efforts.
The National Hockey League and the Hockey Hall of Fame have toured hockey's most prestigious trophy throughout the ECHL since Oct. 26 to raise awareness and money for hurricane relief efforts.
Mississippi and Texas of the ECHL were both unable to play in 2005-06 as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the Florida Everblades had to postpone their season opener for a week because of Hurricane Wilma.
Donations generated by the Stanley Cup appearance benefit charities assisting in hurricane relief efforts including, but not limited to, the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and the United Way. The Tour is another addition to the National Hockey League's charitable efforts which have included a joint donation with the NHL Players' Association of $1 million to the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina relief.
