As the second half of the ECHL season gets underway, the Greenville Grrrowl continue to play some of their best hockey. Greenville is in third place of the Southern Division of the American Conference with a 25-11-2 record. The Grrrowl have 52 points this season and sit just two points out of second place and five points out of first. Gwinnett leads the division with 57 points, while the Florida Everblades are in second with 54.

Greenville will get its chance to gain some ground on the first-place Gladiators with a game in Gwinnett tomorrow night at 7:05. The Grrrowl are 5-1-0 against Gwinnett this season, with the only Gladiator win coming in a 2-1 victory at the BI-LO Center on Jan. 10th. Gwinnett is 15-2-2 at home this year, but both of those regulation losses have come at the hands of the Grrrowl.

Greenville has been equally impressive on the road this season, posting a 13-3-1 road record. Greenville's .794 road winning percentage is tops in the ECHL. Greenville recently set a new team record by winning seven straight road games between December 26th and January 27th.

The Grrrowl are 13-2-1 since December 20th and have taken 27 out of a possible 32 points in that span. Greenville was one win away from tying the team record for consecutive wins (set at eight-straight wins between Jan. 11, 2002 and Jan. 26), but lost in a shootout to Pensacola last Saturday to see its seven-game winning streak snapped.

Player Notes:

Grrrowl rookies Les Haggett and Rory McMahon both had a very productive weekend in Pensacola. McMahon scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Friday night and scored the game-tying goal with 50 seconds left in regulation on Saturday night. The Perdue, Saskatchewan native also had two assists over the weekend and now has 29 points on the season.

Haggett enjoyed a five-point weekend, scoring three goals and assisting on two others. He had two goals and an assist on Saturday night in Greenville's 4-3 shootout loss.

John Snowden and Duncan Dalmao each had three assists over the weekend, while Allan Sirois had a goal and two assists.

Tyler Mosienko and Cody Blanshan are amongst the league leaders in + / -. Mosienko ranks first on the Grrrowl and second amongst ECHL rookies with a +20 rating, while Blanshan's +19 rating is tied for second amongst league defensemen.

Congratulations Cam!

Grrrowl goalie Cam Ellsworth was named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goalie of the Week for Jan. 16-22. The 25-year-old rookie went 3-0-0 with a 0.65 goals against average and a .973 save percentage from Jan. 16th to 21st. Ellsworth recorded his first professional win, his first two pro shutouts, and his first overtime win in the three games.

The 6-1, 200-pound Ellsworth stopped 35 Pensacola shots on Jan. 16th in an 8-0 win over the Ice Pilots. He followed that with a 25-save performance in a 6-0 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Jan. 20th. When Ellsworth allowed an early goal to the Charlotte Checkers on Jan. 21st, his shutout streak ended at 170 minutes and 5 seconds. He went on to beat the Checkers, 3-2, in overtime, sending the Grrrowl to the All-Star break with a six-game winning streak.

Grrrowl rookie forward Tyler Mosienko recently represented Greenville in the 2006 ECHL All-Star Game held in Fresno, California on Jan. 25th. Mosienko participated in the "Rapid Fire" and "Breakaway Relay" portions of the Skills Competition the night before the game. In the actual All-Star Game, he assisted on the American Conference's first and last goals in a 7-6 loss.

Welcome Back Jeff Deslauriers

The Edmonton Oilers announced today the reassigning of goalie Jeff Deslauriers to the Grrrowl. Deslauriers has spent the first half of the 2005-06 season with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL. In 13 games with Hamilton, Deslauriers went 4-7-0 with a 3.15 goals against average and a .897 save percentage.

Deslauriers played 11 games for the Grrrowl in 2004-05, going 7-3-1 with a 2.32 GAA and a .940 save percentage. He was named ECHL Saver of the Week on Feb. 27th after going 3-0-1.

Selected in the second round (31st overall) of the 2002 Entry Draft, Deslauriers is under contract to Edmonton of the National Hockey League. Prior to turning professional, Deslauriers played three seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Chicoutimi. He was 21-20-6 with a goals-against average of 2.87 in 2003-04 and had a career record of 67-64-8.
