Falcons Take Two on the Chin

April 1, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release

The Fresno Falcons squared off with the Colorado Gold Kings three times this past week with the home team taking each of the three games. Unfortunately, the Falcons only played one of the three games at Selland Arena.

In Wednesday night's action, Mike Mathers notched a pair of goals while newcomers Derek Cormier and Jason McBain each netted a pair of points as they defeated the Gold Kings 4-2. Terry Friesen made 22 saves between the pipes for the Falcons.

The two teams continued their three-game set with a pair of games over the weekend in Colorado Springs. Friday night saw the Falcons squander a 4-3 lead in the last five minutes of the hockey game as they fell to the Gold Kings, 5-4. Xavier Majic scored the game winner for the Gold Kings with a power play goal with only 19 seconds left on the clock. Saturday night wasn 't much better as the Gold Kings routed the Falcons, 6-1, behind three power play goals. Cody Bowtell scored two of those power play goals while Majic also netted a pair of goals for himself.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN LOWS

With the completion of this weekend's games, the two teams finished their season series with a record of 4-4, with the home team winning four games each. This marked the second consecutive season that the Falcons have won all four home games against the Gold Kings.

Since the 1999-00 season, these two rivals have owned each other on their home ice. The Falcons are 10-2-0 against the Gold Kings in Selland Arena while they are only 3-10-0 at World Arena over that span. Two of those wins came by way of shootouts last season as they have not won in regulation in Colorado since February 12, 2000. The last time that Falcons lost to the Gold Kings in Fresno was back on February 2, 2000.

DOWN TO THE WIRE

The Falcons will wrap up the home portion of their 2001-02 regular season schedule with three games this weekend against the WCHL's top three teams. The home stand starts on Tuesday night when the Long Beach Ice Dogs come into Selland Arena for 7 p.m. face off. Friday and Saturday will see two division leaders come into Selland Arena when the Idaho Steelheads return for a Friday night bout, followed by a showdown with the San Diego Gulls on Saturday night. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Falcons will close out the 2001-02 season on Sunday when they travel down to Long Beach for a 4 p.m. match up with the Ice Dogs.

Heading into this week's action, Fresno leads the Bakersfield Condors by only a single point in the battle for third place in the Southern Division. The Falcons magic number to clinch third place in the division remains at two, meaning that any combination of Falcons wins and Condors losses that equal two will give the Falcons third place in the division, and a first round playoff battle with the Ice Dogs.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE

Fresno will skate at 10 a.m. on both Monday and Tuesday at Selland Arena in preparation for Tuesday's game. After a day off Wednesday, the team will return to the ice to practice Thursday through Saturday at 10 a.m. at Selland Arena.
