WEEKLY SUMMARY:
The Johnstown Chiefs (39-31-2; 80 PTS NW Div.) closed out the regular season last week going 2-2-0 and clinching their third consecutive playoff berth. It was a record setting week, as the Chiefs won their franchise record 38 th game Friday night at Toledo. Saturday night, with a 6-1 win over Greensboro, they broke the franchise record for most points in a season (80). The Chiefs will face the Peoria Rivermen in the Kelly Cup Northwest division semi-finals. The series is the best of five games. Game #1 will be tomorrow night at Peoria's Carver Arena. Game #2 will also be played in Peoria on Wednesday night. The series will shift to Johnstown on Friday night with Game #3. Game #4 (if necessary) will be played on Saturday night at the War Memorial. Game #5 (if necessary) will be played in Peoria on Tuesday, April 9 th .
GAME #69 (3/27/02) CINCINNATI 6 - Johnstown 4 Carlson Goal, Assist
The Cincinnati Cyclones exploded for three second period goals as they defeated the Johnstown Chiefs 6-4, last Wednesday night in Cincinnati. Philippe Roy, Dan Carlson, Shaun Sutter and Jason Spence scored the Johnstown goals. Dany Sabourin made 31 saves in the defeat.
GAME #70 (3/29/02) Johnstown 2 - TOLEDO 1 Sandrock Two Assists
Philippe Roy's goal 2:59 into overtime gave the Chiefs a 2-1 win, and secured the Chiefs third straight Kelly Cup playoff spot. J.F. Boutin scored a first period power play goal for the Chiefs. Dany Sabourin played strong in net for the Chiefs making 42 saves. This was the final game of a five game, ten day road trip.
GAME #71 (3/30/02) JOHNSTOWN 6 - Greensboro 1 Sutter Two Goals, Assist
Shaun Sutter scored two goals and an assist to lead the Chiefs to a 6-1 win over the Greensboro Generals, Saturday night at the War Memorial. The was the only meeting of the year between the two teams. Jim Leger, Ryan Townsend, Eric Schneider, and Philippe Roy also tallied for the Chiefs. Dany Sabourin made 17 saves for his 14 th win of the season.
GAME #72 (3/31/02) Atlantic City 3 - JOHNSTOWN 2 Deschenes 25 Saves
The Chiefs closed out the 2001-2002 regular season on Easter Sunday with a 3-2 loss, at the hands of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies. Eric Schneider and Ryan Townsend scored the Chiefs goals. Frederic Deschenes made 25 saves in the defeat. He was also unsuccessful is stopping a penalty shot by Atlantic City's Jerry Keefe in the first period.

The Johnstown Chiefs and Peoria Rivermen meet in the ECHL Kelly Cup Northwest division semi-finals. This is a best of five series. The Chiefs had a very successful regular season against the Rivermen going 6-0-0. Two of the wins came in shootouts, while another was in overtime. The Chiefs outscored the Rivermen 18-11 in the season series. The Chiefs are 15- 20-3 all-time against the Rivermen. Peoria is 23-10-5 all-time against the Chiefs.
The two teams are no stranger to one another in the post season. In 2000, they met in the Northern Conference semi- finals with the Rivermen sweeping the Chiefs in three games. The Rivermen went on to win the Kelly Cup that year, with current Chiefs left wing J.F. Boutin being named the Kelly Cup playoffs co-MVP, when he scored 17 goals and 15 assists (32 PTS) in 18 games.
Player assistant coach Bret Myers lead the Rivermen in scoring this season with 34 goals and 26 assists (60 PTS) in 71 games. The Rivermen only allowed 2.49 goals/game (3 rd ECHL), and 27.04 shots/game (1 st ECHL).
Dan Carlson lead the Chiefs with 3 goals, all game winning goals, and 4 assists (7 PTS) in 6 games vs. Peoria this season. Eric Schneider also played strong against Peoria scoring 5 goals and an assist (6 PTS) in just 4 games. Chiefs goaltender Frederic Deschenes was 4-0-0 with a 1.71 GAA and a 0.951 save percentage, while Dany Sabourin was 2-0-0, with a 1.92 GAA and a 0.944 save percentage.
Rivermen rookie center Tyler Rennette was the leading point getter against the Chiefs in the season series, scoring 2 goals and 3 assists (5 PTS) in 6 games. The Chiefs faced Rivermen goaltender Phil Osaer three times this season. Curtis Sanford made two appearances against the Chiefs, and Cody Rudkowsky saw action in one game between the pipes against the Chiefs. Osaer was 0-2-1, with a 2.29 GAA and a 0.877 save percentage against the Chiefs. Sanford was 0-1-1 with a 2.51 GAA and a 0.900 save percentage. Rudkowsky made 29 saves in the Chiefs 4-3 shootout win on March 23 rd .
CHIEFS NOTES:
â¢Rob Sandrock finished the season tied with Roanoke's Duncan Dalmao as the ECHL's top scoring defenseman (57 PTS). Sandrock lead all blue liners with 46 assists. Sandrock had 3 goals and 18 assists (21 PTS), in 19 games since being acquired from Greensboro on February 22 nd .
â¢The Chiefs were tied with Roanoke for most power play goals in the ECHL with 81.
â¢The Chiefs are 3-7, in their last ten playoff games, dating back to Game #2 of the Northern Conference quarter finals against Roanoke in 2000.
