Bridgeport Islanders News Release
LOWELL, MA -- Nick Palmieri scored two goals and Mike McKenna made 30 saves to lead the Lowell Devils to a 5-1 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Friday night at Tsongas Arena. Trevor Smith scored the Sound Tigers only goal.
Brian Mills put the Devils in front 2:28 into the game, scoring his third goal of the year. After the Sound Tigers turned the puck over deep in their own zone, Palmieri put a shot on goal that Scott Munroe tried to bat down with his glove. However, as the puck was in the air, Mills swatted it into the net, just over Munroe's glove as the goaltender attempted to make another save.
Palmieri made it 2-0 when he scored his sixth goal of the year 2:28 into the second period. Palmieri took a pass from Chris Murray and stuffed a wrap-around attempt inside the left post. With 10:05 left in the second, Nick Perkovich blasted a shot over Munroe's left shoulder to make it 3-0 Devils. The Sound Tigers could not take advantage of a four minute power-play late in the period after Murray was called for a high-sticking penalty.
Palmieri netted his second goal of the night with 9:11 left in the game. Palmeri drove a one-time shot from the point following a feed from Tim Sestito. Smith put Bridgeport on the board 1:29 later, redirecting a shot by Mark Wotton past McKenna to tally his ninth goal of the season. Michael Swift capped the scoring with a power-play goal with 38 seconds left.
The Sound Tigers outshot the Devils 31-26. Munroe made 21 saves in the loss for Bridgeport.
The Sound Tigers will be back home on Saturday at 7:00 pm as they host the Springfield Falcons at Arena at Harbor Yard. The game will feature the return of goaltender Rick DiPietro to the Sound Tigers. DiPietro began his career in Bridgeport, leading the team to the Calder Cup Finals in 2002.
