Chicago Wolves News Release

ROSEMONT, Ill.---Chicago Wolves left wing Brett Sterling broke a 2-2 tie midway through the third period with his 24th career game-winning goal, to propel the Wolves to a 3-2 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters at the Allstate Arena Friday night.

With the score knotted at two and 9:30 left to play, Johnny Pohl and Sterling won the puck out of a battle along the boards. Sterling pushed through traffic in front of the net and slid a backhanded shot under Monsters netminder Billy Sauer for the deciding marker, his fourth game-winner in 20 games this season.

It was the only tally scored against Sauer (0-1-0), who replaced goaltender Trevor Cann after the first period. Cann made six saves on eight shots in 20 minutes between the pipes, while Sauer stopped 15 shots in 40 minutes of action.

"Sterling is willing to take the puck to the net and there are rewards for that sometimes," said Wolves Head Coach Don Lever. "We had a couple shifts we didn't like but overall we played a fine game."

Pohl put Chicago (12-11-0-1) ahead, 1-0, 8:10 into the contest when he crouched down and roofed a power-play goal by Cann from the left corner of the crease.

Defenseman Chris Chelios made the Wolves' lead two with his second goal of the season, 12:22 into the first period, with a long rocket from the blue line that blew by Cann.

Lake Erie (8-14-0-2) answered to cut Chicago's lead in half, 2-1, when right wing Darren Haydar picked the puck up at the blue line, carried it into the Wolves zone and slipped a centering pass to T.J. Hensick, who cranked it past Wolves goaltender Drew MacIntyre at 16:24.

The Monsters evened the score, 2-2, with a power-play goal at 3:42 of the third period. Defenseman Tom Preissing worked the puck over to Derek Peltier, who took a shot from high in the slot, which Ryan Stoa got his stick on in front of the net and deflected past MacIntyre.

MacIntyre (7-8-0) made 29 saves in the win.

The Wolves hit the ice again on Saturday when the Texas Stars visit the Allstate Arena at 7 p.m.
