Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Ryan Craig scored the game-winning goal at 1:32 of overtime as the Norfolk Admirals narrowly edged the Adirondack Phantoms 2-1 Friday night in front of 13,127 fans at Wachovia Center.
Returning to Philadelphia for the first time since moving to Glens Falls, the Phantoms came out looking to make a good impression in front of the watchful eyes of their parent organization and old Philly Phantoms fans alike. Adirondack has not enjoyed many friendly bounces over the last month of action, but they got a member's bounce in the first period. Ryan Dingle's centering pass from the left wing hit the outside of Krys Kolanos' left skate and redirected through the legs of Norfolk goaltender Dustin Tokarski to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. It was Kolanos' fourth goal of the season, assisted by Dingle and Rob Bellamy; Bellamy's first point of the year.
The Admirals raised their game in the second period out-shooting Adirondack 16-6, but they were unsuccessful on two power plays in the frame. Late in the period Norfolk finally got on the board when Radek Smolenak picked up a loose puck behind the goal and stuffed his shot through the legs of goaltender Johan Backlund to tie the game at 17:47.
Neither team could break the deadlock in the third period as both Backlund and Tokarski made key saves to keep the game tied at 1-1. Then in overtime, the Admirals used their transition game to find the winner. Radek Smolenak raced up the left wing on a two-on-one rush and slid a pass over to Ryan Craig who one-timed the puck past a fully stretched Backlund at 1:32 to win it for Norfolk.
Dustin Tokarski recorded his eighth win of the season by stopping 22-of-23 shots to help Norfolk improve to 12-13-1-0 on the year. Johan Backlund was named the game's third star as he made 34 saves on 36 shots as they Phantoms dropped to 9-10-2-0 this season. The Admirals out-shot Adirondack 36-23 in the game and went 0-for-3 on the power play; the Phantoms were 0-for-1 with the man-advantage.
The Phantoms now return home for another Time Warner Cable Cup showdown with the Albany River Rats on Saturday, December 5th at 7:00 pm at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
