Rats Edge Hershey 3-1

December 4, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY-The River Rats built a 2-0 lead early in the second period and goaltender Justin Peters took care of the rest, stopping 39-of-40 shots faced to hold-on for a 3-1 nail-biter over the East Division leading Hershey Bears Friday night at the Times Union Center.

River Rats points leader Jerome Samson drew first blood on the power play at 9:55 of the first period, chipping-home a back-door rebound from Stefan Chaput and Jamie McBain for his ninth of the year.

Albany's lead swelled to 2-0 just 3:27 into the second period, when a Brett Carson dump-in caromed awkwardly off of the end-boards and bounced to Mike Angelidis for a wide-open tally, with Hershey goaltender Michael Neuvirth looking the other way. The Bears scored their only goal of the night 31 seconds later on an odd-man rush that saw trailer Andrew Gordon snap a rebound past Peters to make it 2-1 early in the second.

Peters turned-aside sixteen shots in a scoreless third period and Captain Pat Dwyer iced the game with an empty-net goal with six seconds remaining as Albany earned a point in its fourth straight contest and improved to 12-10-1-2 this season. Neuvirth allowed two goals on 32 shots and took the loss as Hershey fell to 15-7-0-2. The Bears out-shot Albany 40-33 and went 0-for-4 on the power play; the River Rats were 1-for-5 on the man-advantage.

Albany heads to Glens Falls tomorrow for Game Four of the Time Warner Cable Cup Series against the Adirondack Phantoms at 7:00 p.m. The River Rats then return to the Times Union Center on Sunday for a 5:00 p.m. start against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. River Rats 2009-10 season and flex ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
