
P-Bruins Defeat Pirates 3-2 in Shootout

Lewiston, ME - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 3-2 Friday evening in a shootout at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The P-Bruins got their goals in regulation from Johnny Boychuk and Trent Whitfield and in the shootout from Zach Hamill, Jamie Arniel and Brad Marchand. The P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday at 7:05 p.m. for Winter Hat Night against the Lowell Devils.
After a scoreless opening period, the Pirates took a 1-0 advantage at the 3:52 mark of the second period. Paul Byron tallied his fifth goal of the season, while Kyle Wanvig recorded the lone assist. The P-Bruins tied the game at one at the 5:46 mark, while on the power play. Matt Marquardt sent the puck to the right point for Boychuck, who blasted the puck into the net for his first goal of the season. The game went into the second intermission tied at one.
The P-Bruins took their first lead of the game at the 2:46 mark of the third period, while on a 5-on-3 power play. Andy Wozniewski had the puck at the left point and put it into the corner for Mikko Lehtonen. He found Whitfield in the slot, who netted his fourth goal of the season. Portland battled back to tie the game at two at the 8:55 mark. Byron scored his second goal of the game and sixth of the season, while Wanvig and Mike Weber grabbed the assists. The game went into overtime tied at two.
After a scoreless overtime, the game went into a shootout. After a scoreless first round the P-Bruins got on the board with a goal from Hamill. Portland answered right back with a goal from Nathan Gerbe. In round three Arniel put the P-Bruins back on top, but once again the Pirates answered with a goal from Byron. Neither team scored in round four and in the fifth round Marchand scored his second shootout goal in as many games to put the P-Bruins back on top. The Pirates did not convert as Providence went on to the 3-2 victory.
Kevin Regan stopped 34 of 36 shots for the P-Bruins, while Patrick Lalime made 42 saves for the Pirates. The P-Bruins were 2-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
