Peoria Rivermen News Release
PEORIA, IL - There was enough offense to go around on Friday night as seven different players scored for the Peoria Rivermen in a 7-1 win over the Manitoba Moose. Lars Eller and Aaron Palushaj led the charge with a goal and two assists each while fellow rookie Anthony Peluso scored the first goal of his professional career.
Ben Bishop came within 12 minutes of his first shutout of the season before allowing his first goal but finished with 18 saves and his seventh win of the season. The Rivermen racked up 38 shots against both of Manitoba's goaltenders as Peoria scored five times in the first two periods and chased starter Cory Schneider from the game. Darren Machesney played the third period and finished with eight saves.
In total, 12 of Peoria's 18 players recorded a point as the Rivermen matched a season high with their seven-goal output. The win was marked the first time the Rivermen have won back-to-back games since they won three in a row between Nov. 5 and 11.
After missing over a month with an injury, Derek Armstrong returned to the lineup for Peoria and scored the first goal of the game at 9:32 of the first period. He was the extra-attacker following a delayed penalty and scored on a rebound from a Chris Porter shot. For Armstrong it was his fourth goal of the season in just his seventh game.
Eller picked up the first of his three points at 15:47 when he finished a play that he helped create. After taking a pass in the neutral zone, Eller threw the puck behind his back and hit Palushaj in stride racing down the right wall. Palushaj's shot beat Schneider but hit the far post and left a rebound for Eller's fourth goal of the season.
The Rivermen expanded their lead to 5-0 with three second-period goals. Barry Tallackson (at 6:54), Julian Talbot (11:18) and Palushaj (16:21) all found the net as Peoria outshot the Moose 14-6 in the frame. Palushaj's goal, his second of the season, came on the power play and was the only power-play goal for the Rivermen in eight chances.
Peluso's goal pushed the score to 6-0 at 3:48 of the third. He took a bouncing pass from Jonas Junland and cut in on goal. After his first shot was stopped, Peluso knocked the puck out of midair and into the net. He also picked up a decisive win in a second period fight with Dusty Collins as he knocked him down with an uppercut.
Manitoba's lone goal not only ended Bishop's bid for a shutout at 8:30 of the third but also stopped a stretch of 28 consecutive penalty kills for the Rivermen. His slapshot goal was the first power-play goal against the Rivermen since their Nov. 20 win over San Antonio.
Ryan Reaves scored the game's final goal at 10:37 of the third when he tipped Armstrong's shot past Machesney for his third of the season.
The Rivermen are now 2-0-0 against Manitoba after being swept in the four-game season series last year. The two teams will not meet again until the final two games of the regular season, April 9-10 in Winnipeg, MB.
