Binghamton Devils News Release
BINGHAMTON - The Binghamton Devils dropped their season opener against the visiting Utica Comets on Saturday night in front of 4,204 fans, 4-3.
After the Comets had a goal called back, the Devils took advantage and a 1-0 lead. As Binghamton's power play came to an end, Mikhail Maltsev found Nathan Bastian in the left wing circle and the winger ripped the puck into an open net for the lead. Bastian's goal was assisted by Maltsev and Julian Melchiori.
Goaltender Evan Cormier made several key saves in the opening period, including stopping Carter Camper on a breakaway opportunity. The Devils took a one-goal lead into the intermission despite being out shot, 13-6.
Utica came out flying in the second period and scored four unanswered goals. Reid Boucher got things going with back-to-back goals 1:23 into the period and 2:16 into the period for a 2-1 lead. Assists on Boucher's goals were credited to Kole Lind (2), Olli Juolevi, and Lukas Jasek.
Justin Bailey put the Comets up 3-1 as he came into the left wing circle and sent the puck through the legs of Cormier for his first of the year. Bailey's goal came at the 6:50 mark with the only assist going to Carter Bancks.
Later in the second period, Guillaume Brisebois took a pass from Boucher from below the goal line and ripped a shot over the left shoulder of Cormier from the hash marks. Both Boucher and Lind collected their third points of the period with the helper. Utica took a 4-1 lead into the third period along with a 29-12 shot advantage.
Looking to cut the Comets lead down in the third, Michael McLeod fed the puck over to Josh Jacobs who fumbled with it in front of the net. Jacobs' second tap on the puck secured it in the back of the net to make the score 4-2 at 10:49 of the third frame.
After a scrum in front of the net, Joey Anderson lifted the puck over the shoulders of McIntyre and brought Binghamton within one with just over a minute remaining in the third. Brett Seney and Chris Conner had the assists on the play. The Devils could not come back to tie the game and fell by one to the Comets.
Cormier stopped 32 of 36 on the night in the loss while McIntyre put aside 19 of 22.
The Devils return home Saturday, October 19 as they host the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:05 p.m. College students can get $10 tickets and your choice of a free drink or slider at Craft! Tickets are available by calling or texting "TICKETS" to 607-722-7367.
