South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays were skating only fifteen men, due to call ups and injuries, but were still able to edge the Columbia Inferno 3-1 at the North Charleston Coliseum on New Year's Eve and push their winning streak to twelve straight games.
"I'm so proud of the way the guys played tonight," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "It was a tough situation with our lineup, and this was the game I was most concerned about, but they played hard all night long. This was a very satisfying win."
The Stingrays started out slowly, and the Inferno jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period. Owen Fussey got his eighth goal of the season, but the lead was short lived. Scott Romfo received a pass from Travis Morin and scored on the break away to even the score at one. The goal came at 14:01 and was the third goal of the season for Romfo.
In the second period the Stingrays took their first lead of the game when Tim Judy scored his third goal of the game. With so few players, defensemen Judy and Andrew Andricopolous were forced to play forward, and Judy took advantage at 2:25. The goal was assisted by Matt W. Reid and Chris Chaput.
In the third period the Rays got an insurance goal on the power play. Cail MacLean notched his seventh goal of the season, his second in two nights, to make it 3-1, the eventual final. The goal was assisted by Pierre-Luc O'Brien, who now has a club leading 21 assists, and Reid.
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 29 of the 30 shots that he faced. The losing goaltender was Jeff Jakaitis who stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced. The Rays went one for two on the power play, and killed off all four of their short handed situations.
The Stingrays head on the road for a seven game in thirteen day trip starting down in Estero, FL featuring a pair of games against the Everblades. Their next game will be this Friday at 7:30.
