Prince George Cougars News Release

With their 3rd round pick, 46th overall, the Cougars have taken Dane Phaneuf, the younger brother of Calgary Flames blue liner Dion Phaneuf. Phaneuf is a right shooting defenceman from Edmonton that stands 5'10" and weighs 150 pounds and played this past season for the Edmonton Southside Athletics of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. Phaneuf produced a point per game in the AMBHL, collecting 3 goals and 21 assists in 24 games, while also posting 60 penalty minutes.

Phaneuf's potential as a leader on the Cougars blue line was a big reason for his selection by Prince George. "Dane is a very smart player, with and without the puck." States Cougars Head Scout Russ Smart. "He reads the play very well, is a strong skater, has a good shot and is going to be a real solid player down the road."

Smart thinks Dane can turn out much like his older brother Dion, who went one pick higher than Dane in the 2000 bantam draft to Red Deer, 45th overall. "They are similar players at this point. Both very smart and I can't say Dane will be exactly like Dion, but there are many similarities."
