Prince Albert, Saskatchewan - The Prince Albert Raiders have selected high scoring centre Mike Winther of Trochu, Alberta with their first round selection, 6th overall in the 2009 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft underway in Edmonton. Winther led the Airdrie Xtreme to the Western Canadian Bantam Championship earlier this month in Weyburn after pacing them to the Alberta Major Bantam League title.

Winther, 5'11", 160 pounds, led the Western Canadian Championship tournament in scoring with 5 goals and 6 assists in four games and was named the Tournaments Top Forward, Top Scorer and All Star Centre.

During the regular season Winther tied for the scoring title in the AMBL South Division with 40 goals and 23 assists for 63 points in 32 games. In the league playoffs, Winther paced the Alberta league in scoring with 13 goals and 9 assists in 14 games as the Xtreme defeated the Edmonton South Gate Lions to advance to the Western Canadians.

"We are extremely pleased to draft a dynamic offensive player like Mike Winther", said Raiders Head Coach and General Manager Bruno Campese from the Draft. "He has tremendous offensive skills and outstanding speed."

"In a couple of years when we have Ryan Harrison, Mark McNeill and Mike Winther as our centres, the Raiders will be extremely strong", added Dave O'Brien, Raiders Head Scout. "He has great speed, goes strong to the net and is fearless."

The Raiders will pick in the second round, 31st overall.
