Rome Emperors News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - Two early runs were all the Braves offense could muster on Tuesday night against the Columbia pitching staff and it wasn't enough as the Fireflies beat Rome 3-2 and won the series. The Braves recent losing skid hit four games with the defeat.
After waiting until the 6th inning for a hit on Monday in the series opener the Rome bats started fast on Tuesday against Fireflies RHP Willy Taveras. Making his Rome debut Jeremy Fernandez reached in the 1st inning on an infield single and moved to second base on a throwing error. Greg Cullen then came up and drove a ball to the wall in right for an RBI double. Henry Quintero eventually brought in Cullen with a sacrifice fly and Rome was up 2-0.
The crucial inning would be the Bottom of the 2nd when three Columbia runs scored on three hits and with some help from the Braves defense. Juan Uriarte brought in a run on an RBI single to make it 2-1. The tying run scored on a fielding error and the go-ahead run came in on a sacrifice fly by Mark Vientos. Two of the three runs against Rome starter LHP Gabriel Noguera were unearned.
Neither offense was able to muster a rally the rest of the night. The Braves put the tying run on base in the 5th and 7th innings but were unable to drive it in. Columbia relievers retired the final 11 Rome hitters they faced in the game.
One major bright spot for Rome was the continued good work of reliever RHP Victor Vodnik, who was just named the team's Player of the Month for May. Vodnik on Tuesday night threw four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. He lowered his season ERA to 2.10. Andrew Moritz was 2-3 in the game with a double.
Rome has now lost 11 of 15 games this season against Columbia including 7 of 8 played at Segra Park. In one run games between the two teams this year Rome is 0-5.
Rome and Columbia conclude their three game series on Wednesday evening. First pitch in the series finale is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Segra Park. Rome will start RHP Jose Olague (5-4, 3.39) while Columbia will counter with RHP Colin Holderman (3-1, 3.86).
