Checkers Schedule Slows Down

(Charlotte, NC - Monday, January 12) - The Checkers (18-14-5 for 41 points) will see their schedule slow considerably in the next two weeks. After playing nine games the past two weeks, Charlotte will only have two games in each of the next two weeks. The Checkers will continue their three-game road trip with a weekend trip to the Northeast. Friday night the Checkers will meet the Reading Royals at the Sovereign Center in Reading, and then Saturday afternoon Charlotte will play a 2:05 p.m. afternoon game at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City against the Boardwalk Bullies. The Checkers will then return home for a pair of weekend games on Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 24, hosting the Greensboro Generals and Greenville Grrrowl.

FRIDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers will play the lone game in the one-game season series against the Reading Royals. Reading's new coach is Derek Clancey, who coached the Jackson (Mississippi) Bandits the past four seasons. The Royals begin the week in fifth place in the ECHL's Northern Division of the Western Conference with a record of 18-12-6 for 42 points, and on a four-game winless streak. Judd Medak leads the Royals in scoring with 14g, 14a, = 28 pts. The Royals are affiliated with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and the AHL's Manchester Monarchs.

SATURDAY'S PREVIEW: Charlotte will close out its short, two-game series with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. at Boardwalk Hall. The Checkers lost 3-2 in a shootout to Atlantic City in their lone meeting back on October 29 at Cricket Arena. The defending ECHL Kelly Cup champions enter the week in second place in the Northern Division of the ECHL's Eastern Conference with a record of 24-9-1 for 49 points. The Bullies are led in scoring by Luke Curtain with 18g, 25a = 43 pts. Veteran goalie Scott Stirling anchors the Bullies defense with an ECHL leading 1.69 GAA and .940 save percentage.

• Right wing Kevin Caulfield has a six-game scoring streak alive, (3g, 3a, = 6pts) and has scored at least a point in six of his seven games played.

• Only the Fresno Falcons have fewer home wins (4) that the Checkers (5).

• Steve MacIntyre scored his first goal of the season in Saturday's 6-5 loss to Augusta Lynx.

• The Checkers are 26th on the power play at 12.35% while 8th on the penalty kill at 86.52%.

• Following the conclusion of the Checkers current three-game road trip, Charlotte will play 21 of its' last 33 games at home at Cricket Arena.

• Charlotte's road penalty kill ranks second in the ECHL with 90.0 percent (108- for-120).

• Center Ryan Cuthbert broke a 21 game goal-scoring drought with two goals in Charlotte's 6-5 shootout loss last Saturday.
