Royals Battle through Tough Road Swing

The Reading Royals winless streak reached a season high four games this week. Reading was shutout for the first time this season on back-to-back nights in Wheeling and Johnstown. The Nailers blanked the Royals 2-0 on Friday night at Wes Banco Arena behind 28 saves from Nick Boucher. Saturday, the Chiefs stung the Royals by a 2-0 count as David Currie registered 25-saves in the Johnstown win. Sunday, Reading battled the Nailers in Wheeling for the fourth time this season. The Royals ended a 153:04 scoring drought as Lars Pettersen tied the game in the second period. The Royals took the lead in the third period, but couldn't hold it as the Nailers prevailed 3-2 in a shootout.

The Royals return home with a pair of games before the ECHL All-Star Break. Reading hosts Charlotte for the only meeting between the Royals and Checkers on Friday night. All Star Distributing is handing out free Royals hats to the first 2,000 fans through the gate. WWE wrestler, Shawn Michaels will be at the game from 5-7 p.m. signing autographs. Friday's game will be televised on WFMZ, Channel 69. Immix Wireless is the sponsor of Saturday's contest between the Royals and Trenton Titans. The first 2,000 fans through the door receive a Royals foam finger. The Coors Light Nascar will also be on display during the game. Both games face off at 7:05 p.m.

Friday, January 9 @ Wheeling Wes Banco Arena 7:30PM

GAME NOTES: The Reading Royals dropped their fourth straight decision to the Wheeling Nailers this season. The Nailers blanked the Royals 2-0 in Wes Banco Arena in Wheeling. Brendon Hodge scored the deciding goal on the power play with just 35-seconds left in the second period. It was the first time this season the Royals were held scoreless. Nick Boucher picked up his league leading fourth shutout this season.

Saturday, January 10 @ Johnstown War Memorial 7:05PM

GAME NOTES: The Chiefs evened the season series with the Royals at two games apiece with their 2-0 shutout. David Currie stopped 25 shots for the Chiefs, who won their third straight contest. Dmitri Tarabrin got the deciding goal for Johnstown on the power play. The Royals were shutout for the first time in back-to-back games in their history.

Sunday, January 11 @ Wheeling Wes Banco Arena 2:00PM

GAME NOTES: The Reading Royals salvaged their only point of the weekend with a shootout loss to the Wheeling Nailers, 3-2. Wheeling beat Reading for the fifth straight time, with four of those wins coming in Wheeling. The Royals got goals from Kent Davyduke and Lars Pettersen to break a scoreless streak of over 150-minutes. Reading and Wheeling will play four more times this season all in the month of March.

Friday, January 16 vs. Charlotte Sovereign Center 7:05PM

GAME NOTES: Reading hosts the Charlotte Checkers for the only time this season. The Royals are 2-3-0 all-time against Charlotte at home. This is the only scheduled meeting between the Checkers and Royals this season. This is a non-division game.

Saturday, January 17 vs. Trenton Sovereign Center 7:05PM

GAME NOTES: Reading and Trenton meet for the fifth time this season. The Titans beat the Royals for the first time last Sunday in Trenton, New Jersey. This is just the second meeting in Reading this season. The Royals beat the Titans in a shootout 3-2 in their last meeting in the Sovereign Center. The two teams will meet four more time this season with each team hosting two contests.

ECHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE:

#19 Lars Pettersen 3GP TEAM RECORD: 0-2-1 STATS: 1-0-1 (even)

Reading struggled to score goals this weekend, but Pettersen was a bright spot. He notched one of the Royals two goals in three games. He also finished the week even in plus/minus rating.

Cody Rudkowsky stopped 108 out of 114 shots this weekend in three tough losses for the Royals. Rudkowsky tied a season high 44-save performance in a loss in Wheeling on January 9. He ranks third in goals against average and tied for third in save percentage in the ECHL.
