Texas Wildcatters News Release
BEAUMONT, TX (January 12, 2004) - The Texas Wildcatters are currently 2-2-1 in the first five games of their West Coast road trip. The Wildcatters will return home on January 16 to face the Louisiana IceGators. On Tuesday, Texas opened up their road trip against the San Diego Gulls, falling 4-3. After a scoreless first period, Mike Garrow opened the scoring in the second for San Diego while on the power play, tapping in his tenth of the year. Billy Tibbetts would double the lead with his seventh of the year on a pass from Pederson. The Wildcatters pulled within one to close out the second stanza with a power-play goal.
Rob Guinn fired a one-time shot past San Diego goaltender David Burleigh after good puck movement by Rae Metz and John Campbell. Lukas Smital tied the game early in the third with a nifty backhanded shot for his eighth of the year. The Gulls would regain a two-goal lead with Pederson and Dan Cousineau scoring. John Snowden pulled the team within one on his 13th goal of the season, but the Wildcatters could not get the tying goal. Davis Parley suffered his 11th loss of the year, ending with 28 saves.
On Wednesday, the Wildcatters traveled to Las Vegas to face the Wranglers for their only meeting of the season, suffering a 5-1 loss.
Just 34 seconds into the game, Chris Kenady scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season on a nice feed from Greg Day. The Wranglers doubled their lead to two while on the power play with Doug Wright's seventh of the year. The Wildcatters scored on a 5-on-3 to pull within one, as Martin Masa took a feed from Lukas Smital from the side of the net. Brian Stacey also assisted on Masa's 7th of the year. The Wranglers netted the next three goals in route to their 21st win of the season. Davis Parley suffered his 12th loss of the year, finishing with 24 saves.
The Wildcatters had a day off to rest before traveling to Long Beach for a two-game series against the Ice Dogs. Friday night, the Wildcatters defeated the Ice Dogs 5-3 to pick up the first win of their six-game road trip. Brian Passmore gave the Wildcatters the lead in the first as he worked through a check on the far boards for his third goal with Texas and eighth of the season. Long Beach would tie the game late in the first on Trevor Read's shot from the right point. Lukas Smital scored his first of two goals in the game in the second as the Wildcatters and Ice Dogs took a 2-2 tie into the third period. The third lead of the night would be the charm for Texas as Brad Fraser scored on a wrist shot from the left point. John Snowden gave Texas the cushion they would need when he banged home a John Campbell rebound for his team leading 14th goal of the season. The Wildcatters were holding onto a 4-3 lead when Smital added his 10th of the year on a breakaway pass from Martin Masa. The five goals were more than enough for Wildcatters goaltender Davis Parley, who made 28 saves for his eighth win of the year.
The Wildcatters completed their two-game series with Long Beach on Saturday, falling 4-3 in overtime. John McNabb scored the only goal of the first period on a blast from the right wing boards. McNabb would give Long Beach a two-goal lead with his second of the night to start the second period. The Wildcatters would tie the game on back-to-back goals by Lukas Smital, his 11th and 12th goals of year. Long Beach would regain the lead in the third on Ken Tasker's first goal of season. Texas responded off an offensive zone face-off as Cory Morgan pulled the puck back to Rob Guinn, who put it home for his third goal of the year. In overtime, Alex Kim picked up a rebound to end the game with 49 seconds left in the extra session for the Ice Dogs. Mark Scally, making his first start for Texas, was solid in goal and finished with 35 saves in the loss.
On Sunday, the Wildcatters traveled to Bakersfield and defeated the Condors 4-2. Cory Morgan gave Texas a 1-0 lead in the first period as he tipped in a Clint Cabana shot from the left point for his 10th goal of the season. Jason Ralph tied the game at one with a five-hole shot on a two-on-one. Texas regained the lead in the second stanza when Morgan scored his second of the game and 11th of the year. Lukas Smital extended his point streak to five games with the assist on Morgan's goal. The Condors tied the game at two early in the third period as Johan Astrom netted his team-leading 15th goal of the year. The Wildcatters wasted no time regaining the lead on a double deflection by Tony Lawrence. Brad Fraser sent the puck towards the net from the right wing boards, Rae Metz deflected the puck, and Lawrence changed the direction one final time as he scored his eighth goal of the year. John Snowden would give Texas a little cushion on the power play when he beat Condors goaltender Shane Bendera for his team-leading 15th goal of the season. Parley finished the game with 33 saves to earn his ninth win of the year.
