Checkers begin four-game road trip this week

(Charlotte, NC - Monday, February 23) The Charlotte Checkers begin a four-game road trip this week with a steady diet of the Greenville Grrrowl and the Greensboro Generals, playing each team two times. The Checkers (26-21-7 = 59 points) will play the Grrrowl Tuesday morning at 10:35 a.m. at the Bi-Lo Center and again at 7:05 p.m. Friday night. Charlotte will play in Greensboro Thursday night at 7:00 p.m., and again on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. The Checkers begin the week on a three game winless skid at 0-2-1.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Checkers enter the week in fifth place in the ECHL's Southern Division of the Eastern Conference with 59 points. The top four teams in the division qualify for post-season play. Charlotte trails fourth place South Carolina by two points but is giving away three games in hand to the Stingrays. The Checkers trail third-place Greensboro by six points, and are seven points behind second-place Florida with four games in hand on the Everblades.

The Checkers will close out the seven-game season series with the Grrrowl with two games this week at Greenville. Charlotte is 3-2-0 against the Grrrowl this season and 1-1-0 at the Bi-Lo Center. Greenville enters the week at 10-37-5 for 25 points and is in last place in the Southern Division. In the last meeting between the two teams, the Grrrowl took a 3-2 victory last Tuesday at Cricket Arena. Left wing Bobby Cunningham leads Greenville in goals and points at (21g-19a = 40 pts) in 37 games. Lifetime the Checkers are 14-20-2 versus the Grrrowl.

Charlotte will close out its eight-game season series with the Generals with two games this week at the Greensboro Coliseum. Greensboro has won four of its last five games, including a 4-3 shootout win in its last outing Saturday night against the Checkers at Cricket Arena. The Generals are 6-4-0 in their last 10 games. The Checkers are 2-4-0 versus the Generals so far this season, including a 1-1-0 mark at the Greensboro Coliseum. Greensboro (32-21-1 = 65 pts) starts the week six points ahead of the Checkers and in third place in the Southern Division. The Checkers won their last game in Greensboro on January 29 in Derek Wilkinson's debut as Head Coach with a 5-3 victory. Lifetime the Checkers are 28-11-3 versus the Generals.

CHECKERS NEWS & NOTES:

· Checkers went 0-1-1 last week.

· The Checkers are 7-3-2 under new Head Coach Derek Wilkinson since he took over January 29.

· Charlotte is 6-3-1 in its last 10 games.

· The Checkers lead the ECHL in short-handed goals with 13.

· Center Konrad McKay has a five-game point streak alive with 2g, 6a, = 8 pts in that span.

· Left wing Lucas Lawson, despite playing in only 18 games, leads the Checkers in power-play goals with five. Lawson has scored at least one point in seven of his last eight games, going 4g, 7a = 11 pts in that span.

· Defenseman Kengo Ito has tied Dave Inman for the best plus/minus on the club with a +14

· Goaltender David St. Germain is tied for second in the ECHL for most shootout losses with four.

· Defenseman Marc. St. John leads the ECHL in short-handed assists with five.

· Goalie Scott Meyer is the tenth best goalie in the ECHL with a .924 save percentage and 2.43 GAA.

· Charlotte is in fifth place in the ECHL's Southern Division of the Eastern Conference, two points behind fourth place South Carolina for the fourth and final playoff spot in the division.

· The Checkers are 25th on the power play at 14.3% while 5th on the penalty kill at 87.3%.
