Admirals enter home stretch
March 13, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
OVERALL...The Admirals come into tonight's action with a 40-18-5-2 record, good for 87 points and second place in the West Division. The Ads sit four points behind the Houston Aeros (91 pts) in the division. Milwaukee is in the midst of a five-game homestand and has a 5-4-0-1 record over the last ten games. After the Admirals finish this current home stretch they will have just three home games the rest of the season. The Ads magic number to clinch a playoff spot currently sits at ten. Any combination of Milwaukee points earned and Iowa points not earned that adds up to ten will secure a spot for Milwaukee in the 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs.
VS. GRAND RAPIDS... The Admirals and the Griffins do battle for the seventh time this season and the fourth and final time at the Bradley Center. So far this year the Ads are 1-2-3-0 versus the Grifs, including a 1-1-1 mark on home ice. The last time these two teams faced off, Grand Rapids' scored with just two seconds left in regulation to tie the game then scored 1:24 into OT to steal a win from the Ads on February 3rd. In 71 career meetings between the two squads, the Admirals have a 25-33-7-7 record, including a 17-13-5-3 mark at the BC.
VS. HOUSTON... The Admirals and Aeros square off for the final time this season this Friday in an important West Division game at the Bradley Center. The Ads are 3-4 versus Houston this year, with a 1-2 mark at the Bradley Center. Most recently, the Aeros swept a pair of games from the Admirals, winning 2-0 on February 25th and 5-2 on February 26th. This is the first time since the 02-03 season that Houston has won two straight games in Milwaukee. All-time versus the Aeros the Admirals are 42-27-2-6, including a 21-13-1-2 mark at the Bradley Center.
VS. OMAHA... The Admirals make travel to Omaha on Saturday night to take on the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights in their first game outside of Wisconsin or Illinois since February 11th. So far this year the Admirals are 5-2 versus the Knights with a 1-1 mark in Omaha. The last time the Admirals and Knights went to battle, the Ads came away with a 4-3 victory at the Bradley Center. Out of the Admirals 15 remaining games, three of them are against Omaha.
LAST WEEK... The Admirals began the week with a 4-0 loss to Peoria on Tuesday night at the Bradley Center. After posting five power-play goals versus the Rivermen in a 6-4 win Saturday, March 4, the Ads couldn't muster a power play tally in eight tries last Tuesday, including two 5-on-3 opportunities. On Friday the Ads were able to atone for dismal showing against Peoria, posting a 6-3 win over the Cleveland Barons at the Bradley Center. Darren Haydar scored two goals and added an assist, while Simon Gamache, Rick Berry, Greg Classen and Nathan Lutz all had two point nights. Pekka Rinne stopped 24 shots to pick up his 25th win of the season.
DUBIOUS DISTINCTION... Not only was last Tuesday night's loss the Admirals second in a row at home, but the team also set a record they would not like to have: most times shut-out at home in one season. The defeat was the fifth time this year that team has failed to score a goal on Bradley Center Ice which eclipses the previous mark of four, set in the team's first year in the International Hockey League, 1977-78, and then matched again last season. In 2003-04 the team went the entire season without being shut-out at home.
POWERING UP...Through 65 games the Admirals have scored 89 power play goals, which is the most they have netted in an entire season since joining the AHL in 2001-02. Their previous AHL high was last season when they had 85 PPGs. The team record for power-play goals in one season is 106, set in the 1993-94 campaign. The Ads are currently sixth in the AHL with a man-advantage, converting at a 19.7% clip (89 of 452). In addition, Darren Haydar's 15 power-play tallies are three shy of the team record of 18, set by Brian Dobbin in 1993-94.
WELCOME TO MILWAUKEE...The Admirals have signed blueliner T.J. Kemp to a try-out contract. Kemp, who shares a July 3rd birthday with Admirals goaltender Brian Finley, has spent most of the season with the Reading Royals where he has posted 36 points (12g-24a) and 44 penalty minutes in 52 games. Prior to his stop in Milwaukee, the Pickering, ONT native has played in six AHL games this season, three each with Peoria and Iowa.
WELCOME TO MILWAUKEE II... The Admirals have also signed defenseman Steve Lingren to an AHL Contract. Lingren has 45 points (22g-23a) and 70 penalty minutes in 59 games for the Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL this season. The Lake Cowichan, BC native spent the previous two seasons with the Rochester Americans, totaling 22 points (5g-17a) and 201 PIMs for the Amerks. A veteran of over 440 AHL/IHL games, Lingren is playing in his 13th professional season.
AN ADMIRAL BLUELINE...In Nashville's 3-2 OT win over Vancouver last Thursday night the Predators blueline featured five defensemen who have logged significant time in an Admirals' sweater either last season or this season. Dan Hamhuis and Ryan Suter both spent the entire year with the Ads last season, while Shea Weber has been in Milwaukee for the majority of this season. Greg Zanon and Kevin Klein have both spent the last two seasons with the Admirals.
BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN...The Predators traded center Kris Beech, along with a first-round draft pick, to the Washington Capitals Thursday in exchange for the defenseman Brendan Witt. Beech was currently third on the Admirals roster with 50 points (18g-32a) in just 48 games. The Salmon Arm, BC native, who was coming off of a three point night (2g-1a) last Saturday versus Peoria, was +4 on the year with 48 penalty minutes. Beech played in five games for Nashville this season, scoring a goal and posting two assists. The 6-2, 208-lbs. center returns to the organization that originally drafted him in the first round (7th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
OVER THE AIR AND ON THE WEB... The Admirals have a new flagship radio station this season in Milwaukee's ESPN Radio 1510 AM (days)/1290 AM (nights). Aaron Sims will call all of the hard-hitting end-to-end action. In addition, the team has a one-hour hockey magazine dubbed "Milwaukee Admirals Center Ice" that airs every Tuesday from 6-7 pm on ESPN Radio. Fans can watch all Admirals games, home and on the road, live on the internet via B2 Networks. Simply go to the Admirals Website at www.milwaukeeadmirals.com
