Abbotsford Heat News Release
San Antonio, TX - The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights finished off a stretch of three games in three nights with their third straight win. They beat the San Antonio Rampage 5-3 on Monday at the AT&T Center. Rookies Brandon Prust and Derek Couture and second year man Justin Taylor had a goal and an assist each to pace the attack.
The Knights were awarded seven minutes of powerplay time early in the first period when defenseman Chris McAllister jumped Prust. He was given 27 minutes of penalties which included a game misconduct. The Knights took advantage when Taylor tipped in a shot from the left point by Zenith Komarniski at 6:22.
Just 52 seconds later, the Rampage tied it when Pascal Rheaume stole a pass at the blueline and raced in on a breakaway. He beat Brent Krahn with a wrist shot for a shorthanded goal.
Late in the first period, the Knights retook the lead. Komarniski hoisted the puck high into the air. It bounced at the feet of Rampage defenseman Matt Spiller. Prust swept in, poked the puck past him and then beat goalie David LeNeveu to give the Knights the 2-1 advantage after one.
The Knights stretched their lead in the second period. Prust broke off the bench, and Brett Palin sent him in down the left wing. His slapshot was stopped by LeNeveu, but the Rampage goalie couldn't control the rebound, and Couture knocked it past him to make it 3-1 Omaha after two.
The Rampage came back with a powerplay goal from Rheaume just 15 seconds into the third period to bring the Knights' lead back down to one goal, but the Knights responded with authority.
First, Richie Regehr ripped home a one-timer from the left face-off circle during a five-on-three powerplay to restore the two goal lead.
Then, Ajay Baines flipped home the rebound of a wraparound chance from Lynn Loyns to make it 5-2. It was Baines' eighth goal of the year and fourth in 12 games with the Knights.
The Rampage got the final goal of the game when Yanick Lehoux scored just as a penalty to Steve Bancroft had ended at 17:31 of the period.
Krahn stopped 22 shots to earn his 21st win of the season.
The Knights are now 30-25-2-8. They were unable to gain any ground on the Iowa Stars who beat the Hamilton Bulldogs 5-4 in a shootout. The Knights have now won four straight road games.
The Knights will get Tuesday off before finishing off the stretch of four games in five days with another game against the Rampage on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Knights' next home game is Saturday, March 18th against Milwaukee. The game will feature the first annual Paper Airplane Toss to benefit the March of Dimes. Buy a paper airplane for $1 and then at the end of the game, toss that airplane at a brand new Chrysler PT Cruiser parked at center ice. If the airplane goes through the sunroof, you'll win the car!
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday from noon through game time and at all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
