March 13, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons, proud members of the American Hockey League, announced today that left wing Zdenek Blatny was named the AHL's CCM/Vector Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 12, 2006. Blatny finished the week with four goals and five assists for nine points in four games and +1 rating in leading Springfield to five of a possible six points in the standings over the weekend.
Blatny started the week on Wednesday, March 8 netting a pair of power play goals and adding one assist earning the game's second star. On Friday, March 10, Blatny was the game's first star collecting two assists, including the helper on Marek Kvapil's game-winning goal. One night later, Blatny scored the game-tying goal against the Providence Bruins on Saturday, March 11, followed by a three-point effort on Sunday, March 12 at Lowell.
Since joining the Falcons on February 8, Blatny has collected eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points in 15 games. Blatny, who scored on his first two shots in his Falcons debut on February 10 in Norfolk, was acquired by the Falcons' National Hockey League affiliate, the Tampa Bay Lightning, in exchange for goaltender Brian Eklund.
Blatny is in his fifth season of professional hockey and has spent time with both the Providence and Boston Bruins this season. In 35 games with Providence this season, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of Brno, Czech Republic, recorded eight goals and 22 assists for 30 points.
Blatny has played in 25 career NHL games, five with Boston and 20 with the Atlanta Thrashers. Blatny was originally drafted by the Thrashers in the third round (68th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Blatny split three seasons (2001-2004) between the Thrashers and the Chicago Wolves before spending the 2004-05 campaign playing in Europe.
The Falcons return to action on Friday, March 17 when they host the Lowell Lock Monsters starting at 7:35 PM. Springfield also hosts the Providence Bruins on Saturday, March 18 at 7:05 PM. All games can be heard live on the Falcons Hockey Network, WMAS AM 1450, as "The Voice" of the Falcons John Michael handles the play-by-play duties. All games can also be seen live through the B-2 Network for only $6.00.
