HAMILTON, ONT - The Iowa Stars and the Hamilton Bulldogs wrapped-up their two-game season series Monday night in Canada. Behind the strength of shootout goals by Mathias Tjarnqvist and Jamie Johnson, the Stars earned a hard-fought 5-4 shootout victory over the Bulldogs.
Forward Brad Winchester put the Bulldogs ahead on the quickest goal scored against the Stars. The goal came just :06 into the first period. The Stars then rattled off the next three goals in the first period. Captain Dan Jancevski evened the score at one with his personal-best seventh goal of the season. Junior Lessard put Iowa ahead with his 20th goal of the season. The power-play goal came at 16:34 of the first period. Kyle Brodziak scored Iowa's second power-play goal with 1:01 left in the opening frame. Defenseman Mario Scalzo picked-up his second straight assist.
The Bulldogs scored two goals in the second period to even the score at three. Winchester's second of the game sent the two teams into the third period tied at three.
In the third period, Loui Eriksson raced down the boards and threaded a pass to Toby Petersen. Petersen calmed the puck and fired a shot between the legs of Hamilton goalie, Yann Denis at 7:33 of the third. Lessard recorded his third point of the game, while Eriksson laid claim to his second helper of the contest. Petersen and Lessard now lead the Stars with 20 goals apiece. Jean-Philippe Cote tied the score at four, with Winchester registering his third point of the game.
After a scoreless overtime period that saw Iowa fire five shots on goal and Stars goalie Dan Ellis make his only save on a breakaway, the two teams went to the shootout.
With both Eriksson and Brodziak denied on their attempts, and Mathias Tjarnqvist and Jamie Johnson successful on their chances, Dan Ellis stood his ground, stopping four of five Bulldog attempts. Ellis' total numbers reflect 18 saves on 22 total shots.
