ECHL Bakersfield Condors

6,179 Bears!

December 1, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. – The results are in from the Condors fifth annual Teddy Bear Toss Night last Saturday at Centennial Garden. A season-high 7,231 helped contribute to 6,179 stuffed animals collected.

Paul Rosebush's fourth goal of the season prompted the launching, as he scored the big goal for the second consecutive season. At that point, the fur began to fly, pouring out onto the Centennial Garden ice. The mark shattered last season's Condors record of over 4,600 teddy bears. This year's amount brings the total from five years of the Teddy Bear Toss in Bakersfield just shy of 20,000. A portion of the amount was collected through Eyewitness News 29's teddy bear competition between local law enforcement agencies.

The United Way of Kern County will distribute the stuffed animals throughout the community during the holiday season, with the help of their agencies in the area. Condors players and mascots will help deliver a portion of the teddy bears in person as well.

"I don't know why we're surprised when we get results like this," said Condors GM Chris Freshour. "The support that our fans show to the community through our various fundraisers and collection drives is staggering. I can't even fathom the amount of joy that 6,100 stuffed animals are going to bring to less fortunate children in our community. We really appreciate everyone's help on Saturday night, from the promotion of the event to fan participation and cleanup."

"It's always a good feeling when all those teddy bears get thrown on the ice," said Condors Alternate Captain Jason Ralph. "It shows how much support the fans have not only for our team, but the community. It's a great event."

"This partnership with the Bakersfield Condors, 29 Eyewitness News and KERN 1410 is just one more way United Way is able to build a caring community," said Miriam Krehbiel, president of United Way of Kern County. "Because of the generosity of our community, 27 local agencies will be able to distribute these bears to needy children at Christmas and throughout the year."

The Condors return home on Friday, December 5th to take on the Fresno Falcons at 7:00pm. The first 2,000 fans 12 and under will receive a Condors Backpack, sponsored by KGET-TV 17 and Wm. K. Lyons Insurance. It's the only game of the week for the Condors, whose next four matches are all on home ice. All Condors games can be heard live on KGEO AM 1230, as well as online at www.bakersfieldcondors.com, with the "Voice of the Condors" Kevin Bartl handling the play-by-play.

Individual seats may be purchased through the Centennial Garden box office, which opens at 10:00am Monday through Saturday, with extended hours on game days. Tickets may also be purchased by phone through Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at www.ticketmaster.com or at any Ticketmaster location. Fans can purchase season tickets, mini-packs and group outings by phoning the Condors office at 324-PUCK (7825), or stopping by the office in Centennial Garden next to the ticket windows.
