December 1, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– There's good news and bad news... First the good news... The San Diego Gulls are unbeaten in seven of their last eight games and are moving up in the standings. Now the bad news... It's getting hard to count all the guys out with injuries.

With their 3-1 record last week, the Blue and Orange moved from sixth to fourth place in the Pacific Division, now trailing the front-running Idaho Steelheads and Las Vegas Wranglers by six points and the second-place Alaska Aces by five points. San Diego has four games in hand on Idaho and Vegas and five games in hand on Alaska.

WEEK IN REVIEW: The Gulls began their busy week Tuesday with a shootout win over the Aces. They pummeled the Long Beach Ice Dogs Friday before falling in Vegas Saturday. San Diego rebounded Sunday to beat the Bakersfield Condors.

Nov. 25 vs. Alaska David Neale scored in the fifth round of the shootout and Trevor Koenig stopped all five Alaska attempts to preserve a Gulls 3-2 victory. San Diego led 2-1 late in the third period but Charles Linglet tied it with 6.4 seconds left. The Aces took an early 1-0 lead, but San Diego jumped ahead with two straight power-play goals.

Nov. 28 vs. Long Beach Mark Pederson scored twice while Greg Barber and Clayton Read each chipped in with a goal and two assists, leading San Diego to an easy 6-1 win over the Ice Dogs. The Gulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second period, before Long Beach got on the scoreboard. The Blue and Orange answered with three more goals and cruised the rest of the way

Nov. 29 @ Las Vegas Rookie netminder Brent Krahn stopped 35 of 36 shots, while Justin Kelly tallied twice, leading the Wranglers to a 5-1 win over the Gulls. San Diego dominated the first period, but was turned away by Krahn. Vegas scored three times in the second and twice more in the third before Mike Garrow spoiled the shutout with 11 seconds left in the game.

Nov. 30 @ Bakersfield: Igor Pohanka, Pederson and Garrow each had a goal and an assist en route to San Diego's 4-2 triumph over the Condors. The Gulls got out to an early one-goal lead before Bakersfield tied it 14 seconds into the middle period. The Blue and Orange then netted two power-play goals, grabbing a 3-1 lead. The Condors cut the lead to one, but Pohanka put the game away with his first professional goal with 6:22 left to play.

THIS WEEK: San Diego continues its homestand with three games this weekend. Friday and Saturday the Gulls will entertain the Charlotte Checkers and Sunday they'll host the Aces. Friday's game begins at 7:35 p.m. and the first 5,000 fans will receive a free Gulls cap, presented by Pro Specialties Group. Saturday's game starts at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday's begins at 5:05 p.m. with "Skate with the Gulls" held immediately afterwards.

TEAM NOTES: The Gulls are 6-1-1 in their last seven games... They're averaging 4.29 goals per home game, but just 1.44 goals per road game... Steve Martinson needs six more wins for 400 all-time in the regular season...

PLAYER NOTES: Pederson has nine points in his last five games... Samy Nasreddine and Dan Cousineau were both placed on injured reserve with groin injuries... Billy Tibbetts is still out with a fractured wrist... Jamie Black, who signed Sunday, is now out with an ankle injury. His status is day-to-day... Sandro Sbrocca was activated last weekend after sitting out four games with a groin injury...

All games can be heard on KPOP 1360AM with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show, hosted by Tera Black and Jeremy Zager on wsradio.com, will begin airing biweekly soon. Stay tuned for more details.
