Former Wheeling Goaltender Vokoun Named NHL Defensive Player of the Week

PRINCETON, N.J. - Former Wheeling and current Nashville Predators goaltender Tomas Vokoun was named the National Hockey League's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Going 4-0-0 with a 1.50 goals against average and a .950 save percentage, Vokoun extended his winning streak to five games as the Predators improved to 8-2-0-0 in their last 10 games and 12-10-1-0 overall, the best record in franchise history after 23 games.

Former Richmond and current Detroit Red Wings goaltender Manny Legace was runner-up for the NHL Defensive Player of the Week, going 3-0-0 with a 0.79 goals against average and one shutout.

Vokoun tied a season high with 34 saves in a 3-2 win at Colorado on Monday, extending Nashville's unbeaten streak at the Pepsi Center to three games. He made 26 stops in a 4-2 win against Columbus on Wednesday and made 32 saves in a 2-1 win at Boston on Friday and had 22 saves in a 4-1 win against Buffalo on Saturday.

Vokoun has appeared in all but two of Nashville's games this season, going 12-8-1 with a 2.37 goals against average and a .915 save percentage, and he has won eight of his last nine decisions since November 8 and is tied for second among NHL goaltenders in victories.

Selected by Nashville from Montreal in the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft, Vokoun was 20-10-2 and ranked 18th in the ECHL with a 3.67 goals against average in 35 regular season games for Wheeling in 1995-96. He ranked third in the ECHL with a 2.61 goals against average while going 4-2-1 with a .903 save percentage in seven postseason games for Wheeling.
