2013 WHL Bantam Draft Recap

Regina, Saskatchewan - The Regina Pats started out the morning by selecting the most dynamic player in the draft, Sherwood Park Flyers Captain Sam Steel. The highly skilled forward finished the 2012-13 AMBHL season with 104 points (52G, 52A) in just 31 games. The 5'10", 155 lbs forward took home some hardware as well this year being named the AMBHL North's Top Forward as well as the North's Most Sportsmanlike Player.

With their second pick of the day, the Pats continued to build on the blue-line by selecting Liam Schioler (6'2", 170 lbs.) of the Shattuk St. Mary's Tier-1 Bantam program. The cousin of fellow Pats prospect, Dane Schioler, tallied 30 points this season in 61 games.

To complete a Draft Day Considerations trade with the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Pats acquired 18-year old forward Geordie Maguire and a third round pick which the Blue and White used to add 6'3", 185 lbs. forward Luc Smith. Maguire comes to the Pats after playing his rookie season in Brandon while Smith totaled 43 points in 29 games of AMBHL action this past season.

Entering the fourth round with three picks, the Pats used the 68th overall selection to acquire goaltender Dawson MacAuley from the Calgary Hitmen. MacAuley was the SJHL co-playoff MVP this year, backstopping the Yorkton Terriers to an SJHL Championship.

With their remaining fourth round picks, the Pats selected defenceman Brady Pouteau 79th and Jared Freadrich 80th.

The Pats next selection came in the sixth round (116th overall) where they picked forward Jacob Elmer from the Edge Hockey School Bantam program.

In the seventh round, the Pats went the goaltending route, selecting Airdrie, AB product Kurtis Chapman. The netminder featured an 8-5-3 record while recording a 2.58 GAA and a .930 Sv% for the Airdrie Extreme.

The Pats' eighth round pick came close to home as the Blue and White selected forward Brady Third from the Notre Dame Bantam Hounds.
