Walk-Off Single Ends Marathon Series Opener

OMAHA, Neb. - Max Ramirez drove in both runs for the Storm Chasers, albeit 11 innings apart, as the Omaha Storm Chasers (37-47) took a 12-inning series opener with the New Orleans Zephyrs (41-44) 2-1. The Storm Chasers pitching staff limited the New Orleans offense to just four hits while recording 19 strikeouts, the most in a game as far back as 1999.

Omaha starter Everett Teaford did not allow a hit through his first six innings of work and recorded a Triple-A career high 9 strikeouts, and in two starts against New Orleans this season Teaford has allowed just one run in 10.1 total innings while striking out 13. Teaford nearly took the loss despite the performance, but after Louis Coleman stranded a runner at third in the seventh with one out Teaford's streak of starts for Omaha without a loss is now at 16 games. In those 16 starts, he has allowed just 12 earned runs in 78.1 total innings (1.38 ERA).

The relief staff of Coleman, Donnie Joseph and Michael Mariot blanked the Zephyrs over the final 5.2 innings of the game and accumulated 10 strikeouts between them. The 19 strikeouts were a season high for the Storm Chasers, eclipsing the 16 strikeouts they posted all the way back on Opening Day when they notched 16. Omaha relievers have now gone 13.2 innings without allowing a run.

Ramirez posted his fifth three-hit game of the season, as well as his second of the current homestand, and drove in the two runs for the Chasers on a singles in the first inning and 12th inning. The walk-off win was the fourth of the season for Omaha, and improved their record in extra-inning games to 4-4 on the season and 3-3 at Werner Park.

In the second game of the three-game set with the Zephyrs number three Royals prospect Yordano Ventura (2-1, 4.94 ERA) will make his sixth career Triple-A appearance, as the young flamethrower has allowed only one run in three of his five outings so far. Ventura will match up with New Orleans righty Jared Rogers (2-2, 6.18 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
