TACOMA, Wash. - Taijuan Walker tossed 5.0 shutout innings as the Tacoma Rainiers topped the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 4-1 at Cheney Stadium on Monday night.

Walker improved to 2-0 in his second Triple-A start after holding the Sky Sox to two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks issued. The right-hander has not allowed a run to score through his first 11.0 innings pitched with the Rainiers following a promotion from Double-A Jackson last month.

The Rainiers pulled ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Stefen Romero led off the frame with a single and then scored two batters later on Rich Poythress' RBI single to center field. Tacoma's lead expanded to 2-0 in the fifth thanks to a double hit by Romero that plated Carlos Triunfel with two outs.

After Lars Davis' solo home for the Sky Sox cut the Rainiers lead to 2-1 in the top of the eighth, catcher Brandon Bantz added some insurance with a two-run single hit with one out in the bottom of the inning.

Romero ended the night going 3-for-4 to lead a Rainiers lineup that combined to collect 10 hits in the series opener. Poythress and Triunfel each turned in two-hit efforts.

Right-handed reliever Logan Bawcom struck out two over a perfect inning of work out of the bullpen in the ninth to earn his team-leading 13th save of the season.

The win snaps a three-game losing skid for the Rainiers and improves the club's lead over the Sky Sox in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Northern Division to three games. At 49-36, Tacoma currently owns the best record in the PCL.

The Rainiers host the second game of a three-game series with Colorado Springs (45-38) at 7 p.m. tomorrow, July 2. Left-hander Danny Hultzen (4-1, 2.20) is slated to get the start for the Rainiers against Sky Sox right-hander Cory Riordan (4-2, 6.33).
