
Redbirds Lose Fifth Straight, Fall 6-2 in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Memphis Redbirds lost their fifth straight game with a 6-2 defeat to the division-leading Iowa Cubs on Tuesday night at Principal Park. Nine of the Cubs' 10 hits went for extra bases, including three triples that a set a Redbirds single-game record.
Memphis dropped to 40-46 and four games behind Iowa in the PCL American Northern division. The Redbirds have lost nine of their last 10 road games.
Brad Nelson and Donnie Murphy each hit two-run home runs, while Junior Lake went 3-for-4 with two triples, a double, and two runs scored.
First baseman Brock Peterson hit his 20th home run and drove in both Redbirds runs in the loss. Second baseman Kolten Wong added his seventh triple of the season and scored a run.
Michael Wacha (4-2) surrendered four runs on eight hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. His first seven hits allowed went for extra bases. The eighth was a single through the drawn-in Redbirds infield. Wacha is now 0-2 in last two starts since being optioned by St. Louis in mid-June.
The Redbirds struck first and took an early 1-0 lead, plating a first-inning run against Guillermo Moscoso (5-5). After Wong's three-bagger down the right field line, Peterson followed with an RBI groundout.
Iowa quickly answered and took a 2-1 lead over Wacha, who gave up three hits and a walk in the bottom of the first. The Cubs' two runs came on a Murphy two-run homer to center, his ninth of the season. The home run was the first given up last 10 games.
Peterson's solo home run in the fourth accounted for Memphis second run and tied the contest at 2-2.
Lake tripled and scored the club's next two runs in the fourth and sixth innings for Iowa. He attacked the first pitch of the inning from Wacha both times.
Nelson's two-run blast off Mitchell Boggs in the seventh extended the Cub lead to 6-2. It was his 14th of the year.
Jorge Rondon stranded is only inherited runner in 2/3 of an inning. Boggs gave up two runs in two innings.
The Redbirds look to avoid a three-game series sweep at 7:05 pm CT on Wednesday night at Principal Park. Right-hander Boone Whiting (4-3, 4.57) will take the mound in the series finale against right-hander Yoanner Negrin (2-3, 4.37).
