Owings Named Minor League Player of the Month for June
July 2, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
RENO, Nev. - Reno Aces infielder Chris Owings has been named the Arizona Diamondbacks Minor League player of the Month for June, marking the third-straight month he has garnered the honor, the organization announced today.
The selection of Owings, who was named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star squad earlier today, marks the first time in D-backs history the organizational player has garnered the award in three consecutive months.
In June, Owings became the first player in Reno franchise history to have at least 40 hits in three consecutive months. The 21-year-old made his Triple-A debut with Reno his season, and hit .369 (45-for-122) with 9 doubles, 4 home runs and 25 RBI in 28 games for the Aces in June. On June 4, his 23-game hit streak, good for the second-longest streak in professional baseball, was snapped.
Owings, who entered the season ranked the D-backs No. 7 prospect by Baseball America, leads all of professional baseball in hits (130), with 12 more than the next closest professional batter and 17 more than any other Minor Leaguer.
The Charleston, S.C. native was drafted by the D-backs in the supplemental first round of the 2009 draft. He combined to bat .290 between Double-A Mobile and Single-A Visalia last season.
LHP David Holmberg of the Double-A Mobile BayBears earned the D-backs Pitcher of the Month honors. He went 3-1 with a 1.75 ERA (7 ER in 36.0 IP) with 27 strikeouts in 5 starts in June for the BayBears.
The Aces will face the Salt Lake Bees tonight and tomorrow night, before hitting the road for an 11-game trip. Tonight fans can enjoy 2-for-$22 Tuesday presented by KTVN Channel 2 News.
Tomorrow's Independence Day Celebration presented by KTVN Channel 2 News and K-Bull 98.1 will wrap up the series, with a grand fireworks show at the conclusion of the game. Prior to Wednesday's game, the finalists of the High School Home Run Derby will slug it out for a chance to compete in the 2013 IGT Triple-A Home Run Derby at Aces Ballpark on July 15.
