July 2, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Today's Game: The RedHawks and Isotopes meet for the second time in their three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Albuquerque notched a 6-4 win last night, snapping a five-game losing streak at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Last Game: The Isotopes took advantage of some RedHawks defensive miscues and came up with some clutch hits in a 6-4 win Monday night. In the first inning, the RedHawks committed two errors, leading to two Albuquerque runs. Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, Brandon Laird and George Springer hit back-to-back home runs, and Che-Hsuan Lin later tied the game with an RBI single. Albuquerque would break the tie in the sixth and score again in the eighth. Two of the three runs came from a pair of two-out RBI singles by Matt Angle, who finished 4-for-4. Isotopes reliever Red Patterson retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings, including five strikeouts, to earn his first career save. RedHawks reliever Kevin Chapman (0-2) was charged with the loss,
Today's Probable Pitcher: Asher Wojciechowski looks to start July in the same fashion he pitched in June...In five starts last month, Wojciechowski posted a 2.78 ERA, held opponents to a .192 average, and had a 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Due to some bad luck, his record was just 1-2...In his last start Thursday at Nashville, Wojciechowski allowed more than three runs in a game for the first time in six starts and for just the third time in 11 starts with OKC. He was charged with four runs and five hits over 5.2 innings, struck out five, and tied a season high with four walks...Wojciechowski has allowed six home runs over his last four starts and 10 in the past eight starts (48.2 IP)...The right-hander has been brilliant at home, going 3-0 with a 1.62 ERA and .185 opponent average in six starts. He has allowed or no runs five times and never given up more than two runs in a game at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Against the Isotopes: 2013: 4-5 2012: 7-9 All-time: 86-82 In OKC: 47-33
Albuquerque ended a five-game losing skid in Oklahoma City Monday, winning their first game in Bricktown since April 23, 2012...The RedHawks and Isotopes split their first eight meetings of the season at Isotopes Park (April 20-23 and June 1-4)...Both teams are hitting over .300 against the other (OKC - .303, ALB - .306) and the Isotopes have outscored the RedHawks 62-45...The RedHawks team ERA is 5.96 against Albuquerque but 4.10 against the rest of the PCL...OKC has hit 11 home runs over the first nine contests...Last season the Isotopes won nine of the first 12 meetings before the RedHawks ended the season series with a four-game sweep in OKC...Jonathan Villar is batting .406 against Albuquerque pitching and Che-Husan Lin is batting .379 with a .526 on-base percentage.
Shooting Stars: RedHawks starting pitcher Jarred Cosart and relief pitcher Jason Stoffel were named as PCL All-Stars earlier today and will play in the Triple-A All-Star Game Wednesday, July 17 in Reno. Cosart (7-4) ranks second in the PCL with a .205 opponent average, third with a 2.98 ERA, tied for third with seven wins, and tied for fourth with 90 strikeouts. Although Stoffel began the year in Double-A, he has performed extremely well since his promotion, posting a 2-0 record with a 1.89 ERA over 23 appearances. His .168 opponent average would be the best among PCL relievers, but he is just 1.2 IP shy of qualifying. Both were Texas League Mid-Season All-Stars last year.
The Laird Up There: Brandon Laird is batting an even .500 (12x24) during his current seven-game hitting streak -- his longest of the season. He's collected five multi-hit games during the streak with one home run and four doubles.
Villar Who Villar: Jonathan Villar has hit safely in each of his last seven games, batting .367 (11x3) with four multi-hit games and four RBI. He has led off each of the past four games with an extra-base hit (one double, two triples, one home run). The shortstop is tied for the league lead with 27 stolen bases, ranks third with 82 games played, and is fourth with eight triples.
20/20 Vision: It's only appropriate George Springer both hit a home run and stole a base last night. Between his time with OKC and Double-A Corpus Christi, he has mashed 21 home runs and stolen 25 bases. He is the only player in all of professional baseball this season be a member of the 20/20 club. The next-highest stolen base total among players in the minors with 20+ HR is nine (Miguel Sano of AA-New Britain). After going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his Triple-A debut Thursday, Springer has hit safely in each of his last five games, going 6-for-13 with two home runs and three RBI.
Back-to-Back Symmetry: Last night marked the second time the RedHawks have hit back-to-back home runs this season. Both instances have come against Albuquerque pitcher Aaron Laffey, and they were exactly one month apart. Laird hit the first home run each time, and the only difference was who connected on the second homer: Fernando Martinez on June 1 and George Springer last night.
Starting Line: Over the last 16 games, the RedHawks starting rotation has posted a 2.33 ERA (25 ER/96.2 IP). In the last 21 games, OKC starting pitchers have allowed one or no earned runs 11 times, with 12 quality starts.
Robbie Trying to Regroup: Robbie Grossman went 2-for-4 last night. He had collected two hits in his previous seven games combined (24 AB). Since rejoining the RedHawks in late May after a month-long stint with the Astros, Grossman is hitting just .175.
Acute Angle: Albuquerque outfielder Matt Angle has been a one-man wrecking crew against the RedHawks the past two seasons. He batted .448 against OKC last year and is 13-for-24 this season, bringing his career totals up to .491 (26x53) with two home runs and 11 RBI over 17 games. He has reached base safely in 11 of his last 12 plate appearances against the RedHawks, including his last nine straight (six hits, three walks).
