Valk scores twice in K-Wings' victory
December 6, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
EVANSVILLE- Sparked by a pair of first period goals by Curtis Valk the Kalamazoo Wings snapped a season-long nine-game (0-8-0-1) winless with a 5-2 victory over the Evansville IceMen Friday night at the Ford Center.
Creating a turnover atop of the right circle, Valk walked in and scored his team-best sixth goal of the season just 1:54 into the game. Two and half minutes later Valk (7th) was at it again. Sliding into the slot, Valk increased the K-Wings lead to 2-0, when he one-timed a Gergo Nagy centering pass.
Etching his name in the record books late in the period, Justin Taylor (2nd) became the K-Wings' all-time leader in ECHL goals scored by jamming in a Jean Bourbeau rebound. The goal was Taylor's 70th as a member of the K-Wings, which breaks the record that was previous held by Trent Daavettila.
Ranked as the league's top-rated road power-play team (27.3%) headed into Friday night, the K-Wings lived up to that ranking capitalizing on a man-advantage opportunity late in the second period. With less than 20 seconds remaining in the middle stanza, Matt Caria's cross rink pass deflected off an Iceman and into the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Attempting a comeback, Evansville responded with two goals in the third period. Cutting towards the net, Kevin Harvey scored his sixth goal of the season to get the IceMen on the board early in the period.
With four minutes remaining, Evansville cut Kalamazoo's lead to 4-2 remaining, when Kale Kerbashian (6th) scored from the high-slot.
Nagy (1st) ended any chance of an IceMen's comeback by tacking on an empty-netter.
Kalamazoo will conclude a brief two-game road swing tomorrow, Saturday, December 6th with a 7:35 p.m. encounter against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
The K-Wings will return to Wings Stadium next Wednesday, December 10th with a 7 p.m. face-off versus the Gwinnett Gladiators during Dime Dog Night, presented by Winter's Sausage.
Between now and Wednesday, December 10th fans that come to any K-Wings home game can register to win two tickets to the Detroit Red Wings game on December 16th versus the Columbus Blue Jackets. The prize also includes a special meet and greet after the game in the Olympia Club.
Tickets for all K-Wings home games are currently on sale at Wings Stadium Ticket Office, all Ticketmaster locations, including www.ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000.
Fans that plan on attending multiple games can avoid service fees plus enjoy a discount from the single-game price by purchasing a 12, 24 or 36-game flexi-plan.
