Colorado Eagles News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Colorado Eagles (11-6-0-0) fell short of the Ontario Reign (11-8-0-2),5-3, on Friday evening at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Colorado wasted no time gaining the early 1-0 advantage as forward Brock Nixon skirted past Ontario netminder Jussi Olkinoura to find the back of the net from the top of the crease just 3:01 into the first period. With just five minutes left in the first, Ontario forward Vincent Arseneau tied the game, 1-1, with a goal that Colorado disputed as defenseman Teigan Zahn was being held down by an Ontario player.
Just :52 into the second frame Reign forward Judd Blackwater picked up a rebound, on a power play, in front of the cage to give Ontario their first lead of the night, 2-1. Two minutes later Ontario forward Derek Couture netted the second power-play goal of the period for the Reign to take the 3-1 lead over the Eagles. With just 3:21 left in the second period, Blackwater found himself on a 2-on-0 breakaway to score his second goal of the night and the Reign's fourth unanswered goal of the night and pump their lead to 4-1. Colorado finally answered as forward Nathan Moon capitalized on the power-play, 18:43 into the second to cut the Reign's lead 4-2. With only :19 left in the second, Eagles defenseman Collin Bowman made it a one-goal game, 4-3, as he threw the puck on net from the boards.
10:08 into the third period Reign forward Matthew Register gave Ontario the 5-3 lead with a shot from the high slot. The Eagles went 1-for-7 on the power play while Ontario capitalized on three of their eight man-advantages. Colorado goalie Doug Carr stopped 12 of Ontario's 17 shots while Olkinoura shut down 18 of the Eagles 21 shots-on-net to secure the 5-3 Reign victory.
