Swamp Rabbits Jump-Start Annual Heroes Night

March 9, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release

Greenville, SC - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, annual Heroes Night presented by Fluor is slated for tomorrow night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena at 7 p.m. The night helps honor the sacrifice made by our armed forces, military veterans, and local first responders across The Upstate. The momentous evening is one of Greenville's most impactful and well attended games every season. One year ago, the team shattered the club's attendance record by welcoming over 8,700 fans to Heroes Night.

Thanks to the Greenville Police Department, the Swamp Rabbits were a part of an inspirational moment to help begin the exciting weekend. The organization helped GPD honor 7-year-old Abby K. at the Greenville Country LEC. Over the last year, Abby has traveled to five different states and visited more than 300 law enforcement officers to deliver homemade care packages containing items such as food, drinks, cool towels, and hot hands. She began her campaign after visiting Greenville for a conference and seeing reports about GPD Officer Allen Jacobs, who was killed in the line of duty one year before her visit.

Swamp Rabbits President & CEO Steve Donner and Stomper presented Abby with a team jersey as well as tickets to Heroes Night to thank her for continued support of the local law enforcement.

"We take our responsibility seriously to support our community and be an active participant in positive events," said Donner. "To hear of a 7-year-old young lady that is setting such a shining example for everyone in our community is so inspirational. We wanted to make her feel like part of our Swamp Rabbits team and honor her support of the brave men and women who protect us."

Greenville's annual night also helps raise money for non-profit support groups in the community. Through fundraising tickets and a post-game jersey auction, the Swamp Rabbits will be giving money back to GRAVITY, Greenville County Fire Chiefs' Association, and Wounded Warrior Project. Before the game, two fire trucks, an armored swat car, and the fire department's smoke house will be outside of the arena from 5-7 p.m. Renowned national anthem performer and the Swamp Rabbits official team artist Joe Everson will be unveiling a brand-new version of his nationally acclaimed rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

"This is an annual tradition for us to show our support. It is growing into a bigger and bigger event every year," continued Donner. "Being able to honor Abby and offer her the opportunity to attend our game was just a perfect start to the weekend. We are looking forward to having a big crowd out to show support for all of our first responders in The Upstate."

The Swamp Rabbits will also be recognizing different local heroes from The Upstate including first responders, veterans, and active duty military members throughout the game tomorrow night.
