GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Manchester Monarchs defeated the Adirondack Thunder, 5-4, Friday night at the Cool Insuring Arena.
The Monarchs (35-20-3-2) extend their lead in the division to three points over the Thunder (33-21-3-3) after a 5-4 victory.
The Thunder opened the scoring at 5:07 of the first period on the 23rd goal of the season by Brian Ward. Paul Rodriguez stole the puck along the left wall and moved towards the slot, where he sent a pass, cross-ice to Ward, who one-timed a shot past Monarchs goaltender, Charles Williams, to make the score, 1-0.
Adirondack doubled their lead at 8:54 of the first period, on the power play, when Brian Ward scored his the 2nd goal of the game and 24th of the season. Mathieu Brodeur sent a pass from the right point to Ward at the top of the slot, where he turned and fired a shot over the glove of Williams, to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead.
The Monarchs cut the lead in half at 12:26 of the first period on the 14th goal of the season for Michael Doherty. Alexx Privitera sent a pass through the neutral zone, that deflected off Thunder defender Blake Thompson's skate and into the Thunder defensive zone. Doherty was the first player to the puck, where he broke in all alone, and beat Thunder goaltender Olivier Mantha to the glove side, to make it, 2-1, Thunder.
Adirondack extended their lead at 15:11 of the first period on the 7th goal of the season for Troy Bourke. Shane Conacher pushed a pass to Bourke as he moved into the offensive zone along the left wing, where he skated past Monarchs defender Craig Wyszomirski and cut towards goal on a breakaway. He deked in front of the net and backhanded a shot past the glove of Williams, to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead.
The Monarchs pulled back within one goal, on a shorthanded goal at 2:43 of the second period, the 19th of the season for Matt Schmalz. Matt Leitner skated into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 and sent a cross-ice pass to Schmalz, where he put a shot past the glove of Mantha, to make the score, 3-2.
The Thunder regained their two-goal lead at 17:07 of the second period, on the power play, on the 10th goal of the season by Rodrigues. Brodeur skated from the right point, down to the bottom of the right circle and sent a backhanded pass into the slot, where it bounced off a Monarchs defenders skate, right to Rodrigues, who backhanded a shot past the glove of Williams, to give the Thunder a 4-2 lead.
Manchester pulled back within one, just :27 seconds later, at 17:34 of the second period on the 4th goal of the season by Rob Hamilton. Spencer Watson sent a pass from behind the goal-line out to the point to Hamilton, where he moved towards the middle of the blue line and wristed a shot, over the glove of Mantha, to make the score, 4-3.
The Monarchs tied things up at 6:34 of the third period on the 6th goal of the season by Cory Ward. Colton Saucerman took a shot from the left point, that was blocked high into the air, where Ward picked up the rebound in the slot and buried a shot, past the glove of Mantha, to tie the game, 4-4.
Manchester took their first lead of the game at 12:21 of the third period on the 2nd goal of the game and 20th of the season for Matt Schmalz. Hamilton took a shot from the point, that Schmalz tipped at the side of the net, past the blocker of Mantha, to give the Monarchs a 5-4 lead.
The Monarchs are back in action Sunday, Mar. 11 (3 p.m.) when they take on the Norfolk Admirals from SNHU Arena.

Ashton Rome played in his first game of the season for the Monarchs.
Colton Saucerman played in his 120th professional game.
Charles Williams made 27 saves on 31 shots.
