Stingrays Tie ECHL Record with 17th Straight Win; Poised to Make History Tomorrow Night
March 13, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Duluth, GA - The South Carolina Stingrays (35-18-1-6) tied the longest winning streak ECHL history Friday night with their 17th victory in a row behind a 4-0 shutout over the Gwinnett Gladiators (17-37-3-2) at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. Tonight's win sets a new ECHL record for most consecutive road wins (11) originally set by the Stingrays back in 2000.
The Stingrays kicked off the scoring 9:25 into the first period when forward Joe Devin caught a pass from defenseman Drew MacKenzie and lifted a backhanded drive over the blocker of Gladiators netminder Mike Lee (L, 35 saves on 39 shots).
Forward Wayne Simpson gave the Stingrays a 2-0 lead at 7:39 of the middle stanza redirecting a feed from forward Andrew Rowe between the legs of Lee. MacKenzie added the second assist. Forward Caleb Herbert sent the Stingrays into the intermission with a three-goal advantage with his 17th goal of the season at 14:26 from forward Patrick Gaul and defenseman Wade Epp.
In the third period, the Stingrays sealed the victory as forward Rob Ricci knocked a rebound past Lee at 16:37 with help from defenseman Marcus Perrier. Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (W, 19 saves on 19 shots) earned his fourth shutout of the season, tying the ECHL season-high. Both teams finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Stingrays honor the men and women of the Armed Forces on Military Appreciation Night presented by APECS Aerospace Corporation, Precision Airparts Support Services, United Aeronautical Corporation, U.S. Technical and Heritage Pools tomorrow, Saturday, March 14 at 7:05 p.m. at the Coliseum. WCW and WWE Champion Ric Flair will fire up the crowd as the Stingrays skate in special "Stars and Stripes" jerseys and auction them off after the contest.
On Sunday, March 15, the Stingrays host their first ever Undie Sunday benefiting the Carolina Youth Development Center against the Gladiators at 3:05 at the Coliseum. Bring new, packaged diapers, men's, women's and kid's underwear along with socks and other undergarments to throw on the ice after the Stingrays score their first goal of the game, similar to Teddy Bear Toss.
Sunday is also Mascot Mania and Crews Subaru Family Day featuring $5 kids tickets and $5 kids meals! Meet all of your favorite mascots from around the Lowcountry! Bring your ice skates for the Health First Postgame Skate with the Stingrays.
