Beast Mow Down Mavericks in Missouri
March 13, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MO- The Brampton Beast knew they were in for a tough test when they looked up in the standings and saw the Missouri Mavericks sitting right above them, hungry for a play off spot. The Beast learned how to rein in their equestrian competition, using a tremendous first period en route to their second win in Missouri this season, defeating the Mavericks by a final score of 5-4.
David Ling led the way for the Beast with a goal and an assist, while Dalton Thrower, Brett Lyon, Bobby Hughes and Tyler Stothers also added a goal apiece. Ryan DeMelo backstopped the team with 30 saves in an uplifting victory after a roller coaster weekend.
The first period started off exactly how the Beast wanted. The Mavericks' Ludwig Karlsson took a high sticking penalty just 1:04 into the game and the Beast went on the power play. After generating scoring chances through out the power play, David Ling and Mathew Maione did a little give-and-go at the blue line and the veteran sent the rookie into the zone with a beautiful pass. As the penalty expired, Maione fired a wrister onto the net that was tipped into the back of the net by Brett Lyon, his second in a Beast uniform, for a 1-0 lead.
After a post-whistle scrum mid-way through the period, the Beast found themselves on the penalty kill when Stephon Thorne went off for slashing. As the Mavericks worked the puck around the Beast zone on the power play, the biscuit made its way to the blue line. As the Missouri defenceman wound up for a blast from the point, Bobby Hughes got his stick in front of the shot and broke away on a short handed break. Hughes faked Mavericks goalie Mike Clemente with a wrist shot then tucked the puck through the wickets for Hughes' first shorthanded goal of the season.
With just over four minutes left in the frame, the Beast won a defensive zone face off and broke out into the Mavericks zone with numbers. As the Beast moved the puck around the Missouri end, Riley Austin fired a puck off the end boards that made its way to Tyson Fawcett at the side of the net. He tapped it onto the tape of Tyler Stothers, who made no mistake, finishing for his first professional goal. The Mavericks replied with a terrific power play goal with 57 seconds left in the first period to send the Beast into the dressing room with a 3-1 lead.
After a minute of four-on-four action just two minutes into the second period, David Ling returned to the ice but the Mavericks went onto the attack. Troy Vance skated the puck into the Beast zone and danced around the Beast defence. He made his way around the net and beat Ryan DeMelo with a wrap around to reduce the deficit to one. When Brett Lyon went off for high-sticking 46 seconds later, the Mavericks capitalized again, as a point shot was tipped past DeMelo to tie the game at 3-3.
When Brett Lyon took a holding penalty at 11:37 of the frame, the teams played some 4-on-4 hockey. After David Ling brought the puck into the Mavericks zone and misfired on a slapper from the top of the circle, Justin Donati corralled the puck behind the Missouri net. He shook off a defender and found a streaking Ling in the slot, who wouldn't miss twice, as he potted his eighth of the season. Dalton Thrower added his second of the season with 13 seconds remaining for a 5-3 Beast lead.
The Mavericks pulled within one on a power play goal by Geoff Walker with 4:47 remaining in the third period.
The Beast travel to Tulsa for two games against the Oilers before they return home on Thursday March 19, when they host St. Patrick's Day at the Powerade Centre, where fans are encouraged to rock their most outrageous St. Patty's Day gear. Friday March 20 is the Night of Champions, where the Beast will be celebrating success and excellence in sport. Sunday March 22 is team picture day, where the first 1000 fans in attendance will receive a free team picture that you can get signed during the free skate after the game!
