Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Mavericks climbed back from an early 3-0 deficit on Friday night against the Brampton Beast, but their luck ultimately ran out in the final minutes of regulation. Missouri came within one goal of the visiting Beast, netting three power-play goals and one short-handed goal, only to fall-short 5-4.
Brampton opened the scoring race with three goals spread through the first sixteen minutes of play. Brett Lyon struck first at 3:07 with the help of Mathew Maione and David Ling. Then Bobby Hughes doubled the Beast's lead, unassisted, with a short-handed goal over the Mavs at 9:36. Tyler Stothers' scored the third goal (assisted by Tyson Fawcett and Riley Austin) that would end Mike Clemente's night between the pipes for the Mavericks at 15:42. Net-minder Josh Robinson replaced Clemente in goal for the remainder of the contest.
Lindsay Sparks broke the scoring slump for the home team, notching his sixteenth goal of the season with a power-play lamp-lighter that brought Independence Events Center back to life with only fifty-seven seconds left in the opening period. Andrew Courtney and defenseman Colten Hayes were credited with the assists on Sparks' tally.
Missouri made their big move in the second period, scoring twice to tie the game 3-3, first with a short-handed effort by Mavs newcomer Troy Vance with an assist from Patch Alber, and then with a power-play goal from rookie Geordie Wudrick with the help of defensemen Matt Stephenson and Alber before five minutes had passed.
Brampton answered back with two of their own tallies via Ling with a lone assist from Justin Donati and another from Dalton Thrower, unassisted at 19:47.
Down by two, Missouri pushed themselves back into the game 5-4 at 15:13 when Geoff Walker scored the third power-play goal of the night for the Mavericks. Sparks and Ludwig Karlsson were credited with the assists.
The Mavs pulled Robinson from goal in favor of a sixth skater in the final minutes of regulation to try and force an overtime situation, but ran out of opportunities to tie the game, falling 5-4.
The Mavericks play their next game on the road in Moline, IL on Sunday afternoon at 4:05pm (CST) against the Quad City Mallards. Missouri returns home on Mar. 28 for a 7:05pm (CST) matchup against the Wichita Thunder at Independence Events Center for Fan Appreciation Night and their Warm-up Jersey Auction!
