South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Augusta, GA - Trent Campbell scored two goals in the third period to lead the South Carolina Stingrays to a 4-3 win over the Augusta Lynx, their seventh straight win to finish out the regular season.
"We knew that it would not be an easy game," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "We battled tonight and finished out the season on a high note. I am really proud of these guys."
The South Carolina Stingrays came out in the first period against the team they will face in the first round of the playoffs. The Stingrays had a number of chances, but J.P. Levasseur was up to the task as he turned aside all 10 shots he faced. The lone goal of the period came from Shane Hynes, his sixth of the season, and after one period, the Rays trailed by one.
It was a back and forth second period of play with South Carolina tying up the game twice. Matt Smith got the 5th goal of his career in just his 7th game, at 1:31 to tie the game up at one. The goal was assisted by Marty Guerin and Paul McIlveen. Augusta took the lead again on B.J. Crum's second goal of the season, but South Carolina responded, tying the game up at two on Guerin's 18th goal of the season. The goal came at 13:17 and was assisted McIlveen. Just over a minute later Adrian Veideman got his 11th goal of the season to make it 3-2 in favor of Augusta after two periods of play.
The Rays tied the game up for the third time on the night when Trent Campbell put a rebound past Levasseur. The goal came at 7:50 from Travis Morin and Rory Rawlyk, the 21st goal of the season for Campbell. He would score again, giving the Rays their first lead of the game at 15:50 from Rawlyk and Sasha Pokulok. The goal was the 22nd of the season for Campbell and was his fifth goal in two games. The goal made the score 4-3 in favor of the Rays, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 19 of the 22 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Levasseur who stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-5 on the power play while killing off all three short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action on Thursday when they take on the Augusta Lynx in the first game of the playoffs. The game will take place at James Brown Arena starting at 7:05.
