Cincinnati Wins Brabham Cup

April 5, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. - Cincinnati has captured the Brabham Cup for 2007-08 with 115 points. The 115 points are the second most in the 20-year history of the league, one behind the record of 116 by Louisiana in 2001-02.

Texas also finished with 115 points, but the Cyclones are declared the winner with 55 wins compared to 52 for the Wildcatters. The Cyclones, who lost 2-1 at Trenton on Saturday, finish 55-12-5 while Texas, which lost 5-3 at Florida on Saturday, is 52-9-11.

Cincinnati's 55 wins are the second-most in ECHL history, one behind the record of 56 by Louisiana in 2001-02, while Texas' 52 wins are the sixth-most. The Cyclones and Wildcatters each have 26 road wins tying the ECHL record by Louisiana in 2001-02.

The Brabham Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the ECHL team that finishes with the most points in the regular season. The recipient is guaranteed home-ice advantage throughout its participation in the Kelly Cup Playoffs.

The award is named in recognition of Henry Brabham, who founded the ECHL in 1988-89 with five teams in four states. Brabham, who was the first inductee into the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2008, owned three of the original five teams, including the legendary Johnstown Chiefs who are celebrating their 20th season in 2007-08. The dedication of the Virginia businessman was crucial to the league surviving to span from coast-to-coast while advancing 353 players and countless coaches, on-ice officials and front office personnel to the National Hockey League.

Cincinnati, which also captures the American Conference regular season title, opens the Kelly Cup Playoffs on Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts either Dayton or Johnstown in the first game of a best-of-seven series.

The Bombers host the Chiefs in Game 1 of their North Division Quarterfinals series at 5 p.m. on Sunday with Game 2 at 7 p.m. in Johnstown on Tuesday. Game 3, if necessary, will be played Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Johnstown. The two teams mutually agreed to begin their best-of-three series on Sunday as Johnstown was in town for the final regular season game on Saturday.

The Wildcatters, who are the South Division regular season champion, open the Kelly Cup Playoffs on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. when they host Mississippi in Game 1 of their best-of-five series.

The Cyclones have 29 home wins which ties the league record for fourth-most held by Pee Dee (1998-99), Toledo (2002-03) and Gwinnett (2005-06). Texas finishes with nine regulation losses breaking the ECHL record of 11 set by Richmond in 1995-96. Cincinnati has 12 regulation losses tying the record for third-fewest losses held by Alaska in 2005-06 and Las Vegas in 2006-07.

Texas had three home losses, which is one shy of the league record by Louisiana in 2001-02. Cincinnati had four home losses tying the record for third-fewest. The Cyclones are the ninth team to have four home losses and the first since Gwinnett and Alaska in 2005-06.

Texas has six road losses which is one more than the league record of five by Las Vegas in 2006-07. Las Vegas had seven road losses this season tying the record for fourth-fewest set by Peoria in 2003-04 and tied by Bakersfield in 2006-07.

The Cyclones set the ECHL record with 17 wins in a row from Jan. 16-29, breaking the record of 14 by Knoxville from Dec. 28, 1993-Jan. 29, 1994 and Louisiana from Nov. 23-Dec. 22, 2001. Cincinnati also had an ECHL season-high and team-record 14-game home winning streak from Jan. 5-Mar. 12.

Texas becomes the fourth team in ECHL history to win 50 games and not win the Brabham Cup, joining Gwinnett and Las Vegas in 2005-06 and Wheeling in 2003-04.

Las Vegas captured the Brabham Cup on the final day of the 2006-07 season after winning their final 13 regular season games to finish 46-12-14 with 106 points, one point ahead of Alaska at 49-16-7.

Alaska won the regular season title on the second to the last day of the 2005-06 season and finished 53-12-7 with 113 points, one point ahead of Las Vegas at 53-13-6 and six points in front of Gwinnett at 50-15-7.
