Trenton Devils News Release

TRENTON, NJ (April 5, 2008) - The Trenton Devils finished their season in one of the best ways possible, rallying in front of 6,486 screaming fans in the third period to defeat the Brabham Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones, 2-1.

Stopped by Cody Rudkowsky for two frames and victimized by a Mathieu Aubin tally just 21 seconds into the contest, the Devils refused to cave to a team which has racked up 115 points this season.

Exploding out of the second intermission, Trenton tied the game 6:10 in, courtesy of Jim Henkel and Eric Castonguay. The duo combined for the second time this weekend when Henkel took a Stephen Wood pass in the middle of the slot and slid it to Castonguay at the left circle.

The youngest member of the Devils squad showed outstanding patience at the dot, waiting to line up his shot while the Cyclones scrambled to intercept. Then, sensing an opening, the Quebecois rookie sniped a riser into the top right corner to tie the game.

In a battle of the young guns, which featured two ECHL All-Rookies (Trenton's Ryan Gunderson and Cincinnati's David Desharnais), it would be the newest member of the Trenton Devils to net the game winner.

Rookie Chris Poli scored his fourth goal of the season-and second game-winning tally-by leading a three-on-two into the Cyclones' zone. Poli skated across the Trenton Devils' logo on center ice and crossed the blue line just seconds before firing a laser beam into the top left shelf.

That tally came just 1:09 after Castonguay's ripper, reminiscent of several Devils two-goal outbursts this season.

Jason Smith was perfect after the Aubin goal, piecing together over 59 minutes of shutout defense to allow Trenton to come back and give the fans a thrilling victory. The rookie netminder made 24 saves on 25 shots for his 13th win of the season.

In the goaltender's last two contests against Cincinnati, Smith kept the ECHL's leading offense (291 goals for this season) to just one marker.
