Checkers trampled by Gladiators, lose 4-1

Gwinnett, GA-The Charlotte Checkers lost to the Gwinnett Gladiators by a 4-1 score resulting in the team finishing sixth in the South Division.

In the first period, the Gladiators struck early with a slap shot by Bryson Busniuk that fooled Checkers goalie Mike Ayers over the catching glove at 1:10. The Checkers tied the contest when Adam Nightingale directed a rebound past Gwinnett netminder, Dan Turple off a shot from Mark Lee. The Gladiators recaptured a one goal lead when Andy Brandt found a loose puck in front of Mike Ayers and swatted it into net at 6:05. A power play goal by Gwinnett extended their lead when Jeff Campbell fired a one-timer past the blocker of Ayers at 12:31. The period ended with the Gladiators holding a 3-1 advantage over Charlotte.

Gwinnett scored early in the second period while on the power play. A cross ice pass through the crease by Chad Painchaud found the stick of Brad Schell who blasted it past Ayers at 37 seconds into the stanza. After 40 minutes, the Gladiators held a 4-1 lead.

There would be no goals scored in the final period resulting in a 4-1 loss for the Checkers and a date with the Gladiators in the post-season starting on April 8th.

The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
