Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID - Mark Bomersback and Taggart Desmet buried third period goals and Matt Zaba made 28 stops to help the Steelheads beat the Falcons 2-1 for their 40th win of the season in the final regular season game for both sides on Saturday night.

A sold out crowd of 5,075 watched as the Steelheads (40-22-10) finished the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1) and 90 points on the campaign. The defending Kelly Cup Champions have now won at least 40 games in each of their five ECHL seasons and they end 2007-2008 with a 2-4-2 mark against the Falcons (42-21-8) and a seven-game home winning streak.

Desmet broke a scoreless deadlock 7:11 into the third period when he roofed a backhander over a sprawled out Jake Moreland (21 saves) for his team-leading 29th of the season. Bomersback grabbed the lone assist.

The Falcons tied the match a few minutes later on a power play goal by Matt O'Dette, his seventh of the year. On the play, Kenny Bernard's point shot was turned aside by Steelheads' goaltender Zaba, but the rebound was deposited by O'Dette.

Late in the third with the game tied at one, Bomersback found a loose puck off a scramble in front of Moreland and he converted a five-hole offering to give him 20 goals on the season. Desmet and Jeremy Scherlinck set up the eventual game-winner.

Neither team scored through 40 minutes of play and the shots were even at 16 apiece.

The final shots favored the Falcons 29-23. The Steelheads went scoreless in five power play tries, while the Falcons scored once in seven chances. Zaba earned the win to improve to 15-8-2 on the season and 12-4-1 with the Steelheads. Moreland dropped to 5-2-0 against the Steelheads this season and 22-11-4 on the campaign.
