Campbell Wins Sportsmanship Award

April 5, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The ECHL announced today that Gwinnett Gladiators forward Jeff Campbell has been named the 2007-08 ECHL Sportsman of the Year. The award is presented annually to the player who is judged to have exhibited the best sportsmanship combined with a high standard of playing ability.

ECHL coaches vote on the player who most deserves the award. David Desharnais of Cincinnati finished second while Ash Goldie of Victoria and Oren Eizenman of Fresno tied for third and Tim Konsorada of Bakersfield was fifth.

Campbell becomes the second Gladiator to win the award while wearing a Gwinnett uniform. Chris Goodjohn was honored with the award for the 2004-05 season. Last season, Gladiators Derek Nesbitt won the award, but he was playing for the Idaho Steelheads at the time.

The 5-foot-9-inch Campbell was also named to the All-ECHL first team on Friday. The Hensall, Ontario native was named to the All-ECHL first team and was named the ECHL's most valuable player following the 2005-06 season and he was named to the ECHL All-rookie team in his rookie year of 2004-05.

Campbell has tallied 25 goals and 65 assists for 90 points in 64 games with the Gladiators this season. Included in that total was a streak of 13 straight games in which Campbell notched at least one assist.

The streak, in which Campbell notched 20 assists, was good for the Gwinnett record for longest assist-scoring streak, besting Brad Schell's mark of 11 games set in the 2006-07 season.

The Gladiators continue their fifth anniversary season on Saturday, April 5th as they host the Charlotte Checkers at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 7:35 p.m. Catch all the play-by-play action in Friday's game online via AccessNorthGa.com on Audio Streaming Channel 3.

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in 2007-08, the ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league that has 25 teams in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08. The 25 teams includes the Mississippi (Biloxi) Sea Wolves, who return after missing two seasons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the expansion Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals. The ECHL will play 900 games beginning Oct. 18 and concluding Apr. 5.

The Gwinnett Gladiators continue their fifth season as a proud member of the ECHL - season ticket packages are on sale now.
