Kelly Cup Playoffs Get Underway Sunday In Dayton

April 5, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. - The 2008 Kelly Cup Playoffs will officially begin on Sunday at 5 p.m. when the Dayton Bombers host the Johnstown Chiefs in Game 1 of their North Division Quarterfinals series at the Nutter Center.

The two teams mutually agreed to begin their best-of-three series on Sunday as Johnstown is in town for the final regular season game on Saturday. Game 2 is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown. Game 3, if necessary, will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Johnstown.

The winner advances to meet North Division regular season champion Cincinnati in a best-of-seven series. The Cyclones will host Game 1 on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Game 2 on Apr. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The other Division Semifinals will be between Elmira and Reading. The winners advance to the best-of-seven Division Finals with the winner advancing to the American Conference Finals to meet the winner of the South Division in a best-of-seven series.

The Chiefs are in the postseason for the third straight year for the first time since advancing in 2000, 2001 and 2002 and for the 13th time overall in their 20-year history. The Bombers are making back-to-back Kelly Cup Playoffs appearances for the first time since 2001 and 2002 and for the 13th time in their 17-year history.

Dayton reached the Kelly Cup Finals in 2006 and became the only team in ECHL history to play two Game 7s in a single postseason. The Bombers beat Cincinnati 5-3 at home to win the North Division Finals and won 3-1 at Florida to capture the American Conference, only the third time in 12 games that the visiting team won Game 7. Dayton became only the third team ever to overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a playoff series when they beat Cincinnati in the North Division Finals, winning Game 5 (6-2 at Cincinnati) before winning Game 6 (3-0 at home) and Game 7 (5-3 at home).

The South Division will have series beginning on Tuesday while the National Conference is scheduled to get underway beginning Thursday.
