Salmon Kings Shut Down Aces

April 5, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces met tonight in the second game of a three-game set. A crucial game for the Salmon Kings as a win would give Victoria the opportunity to clinch their first ever West Division title.

The first period was highlighted by the goaltenders, Victoria's Billy Thompson and Alaska's Mike Brown, who both made crucial saves to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0 after the opening frame.

Both teams continued the tight checking game in the second. The Kings got on the board when two of the newest Salmon Kings hooked up for a goal. Jacob Dietrich found Brady Leavold on a stretch pass that sent him in one-on-one against Alaska defender Felipe Larranaga. Leavold was able to put a move on Larranaga to come in alone on Brown. The rookie then slipped the puck past the Aces' netminder for the 1-0 lead. That would be the score after 40 minutes of play.

The goaltenders continued to steal the show in the third period with both keepers making incredible saves to keep it a 1-0 score. With Alaska's net empty for an extra attacker, Wes Goldie took a pass from his brother Ash and battled through a couple of Aces and fired the puck into the vacated net from just inside the Alaska blueline. Salmon Kings 2 Aces 0.

The Salmon Kings went 0/6=0% on the power play while the Aces were 0/6=0%. Alaska out shot Victoria 35-34. With the win the Salmon Kings retake sole possession of first place with 89 points.

It is a three horse race heading into the final night of the season. The Kings require at minimum one point from tomorrow night's contest versus Alaska to secure the West Division title. Alaska needs a regulation win combined with Idaho gaining no more than one point in their game versus Fresno for the Aces to grab the top spot in the West. Idaho needs to defeat Fresno and then have Alaska beat Victoria in regulation time for the division title. The three teams will fill the second, fourth and fifth place spots in the upcoming Kelly Cup Playoffs.

The Salmon Kings and Aces conclude their three-game set tomorrow night with first place on the line. The puck drops at 7:05. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
