Oklahoma City Barons News Release

Derek Hulak scored two goals and Maxime Fortunus and Matt Mangene registered two assists apiece as the Texas Stars skated past the Oklahoma City Barons 5-2 Tuesday night at the Cox Convention Center. The loss was Oklahoma City's first in eight games, ending a seven-game winning streak.

Barons goalie Laurent Brossoit suffered his first loss in net in seven games dating back to Dec. 18 and surrendered more than three goals for the first time since Nov. 15.

Kellen Jones opened the game's scoring for the Barons, receiving a pass from his twin brother Connor Jones near the Texas blue line and ripping a shot from just beyond the right circle that sailed over the blocker of Stars goalie Jussi Rynnas for a 1-0 Oklahoma City lead at 5:51 of the first period.

Texas would score the next four goals, however, starting with Travis Morin's tally at 6:35 of the first, after the reigning AHL MVP grabbed a loose puck in the right corner of the OKC zone and lifted a shot past Brossoit.

Gemel Smith gave the Stars a 2-1 lead at 11:08 of the frame when he grabbed the rebound off a Fortunus shot and glided the puck past Brossoit from just in front of the Barons net.

At 8:54 of the second period, the Stars extended their lead to 3-1, again following a shot by Fortunus from the point. Hulak grabbed the loose puck in front of the Barons net and, like Smith on the previous goal, slid a shot that went just beyond the pads of Brossoit and into the Oklahoma City net.

Exactly halfway through the second period, Jesse Root put the Stars up 4-1 when he took a pass from Mangene at the point and fired a shot through the legs of Brossoit. Following Root's goal, Richard Bachman replaced Brossoit in the Barons net.

The Barons cut the Stars lead to 4-2 at 2:02 of the third period when Jordan Oesterle skidded a pass through the Texas slot to Steve Pinizzotto, who flipped the puck over the shoulder of Rynnas. The goal was Pinizzotto's first AHL goal of the season, in his first game with the Barons since Nov. 15.

Hulak's second goal of the game gave the Stars a 5-2 lead at 10:20 of the third when he took a pass in front of the Oklahoma City net from Scott Glennie on a 3-on-1 Texas rush and chipped the puck past Bachman.

The Barons are back in action Friday, Jan. 9 when they travel to Glens Falls, New York to face the Adirondack Flames in a 6 p.m. CST start at Glens Falls Civic Center.
