
Sharks Begin Five Game Home Stand at DCU Center - Worcester Sharks Weekly

Shark Snap Shot:
The Worcester Sharks (14-14-3-2, 33pts) chomped five out of a possible eight points in four games last week. Worcester closed out 2014 with a 6-2 home win over the Sound Tigers on Tuesday but kicked off 2015 with a 2-1 home loss to the Monarchs on Friday. Worcester fell in the shootout by the score of 4-3 on Saturday in Springfield but closed out the week with a 3-1 win in Providence on Sunday. With the two wins last week, head coach Roy Sommer moved into 3rd place in AHL history with 590 wins and coached his 1,300th AHL game in Springfield on Jan 3.
Worcester sits in 4th place in the Atlantic Division with 33 points (14-14-3-2) and 13th overall in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks are just five points behind the Providence Bruins for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East (Sharks have two games in hand).
Highlights from the week include six points (0-6-6) in three games for Freddie Hamilton before his NHL recall on Jan 4. Troy Grosenick went 2-1-0 in three starts with a .945 save % while JP Anderson made a season high 40 saves in a 4-3 shootout loss in Springfield on Saturday. Chris Tierney had three points (2-1-3) in three games since his return back from the NHL and Dylan Demelo picked up four points (1-3-4) in four games last week from the blue line. Newcomer Willie Coetzee added three points (1-2-3) in four games as did defenseman Taylor Fedun (0-3-3) as the Sharks picked up five points in four games last week.
Head Coach Roy Sommer was selected to coach the Eastern Conference AHL All-Stars as he will join Mike Stothers (Manchester) behind the bench. Sharks defenseman Matt Taormina was selected as an AHL All-Star for the first time as he is second on Worcester with 18 points (4-14-18) in 33 games.
Rookie Chris Tierney was returned to Worcester from San Jose on Dec 30 after appearing in three games for San Jose. Freddie Hamilton was recalled to San Jose on Jan 4 for his 1st recall of the season while Micheal Haley was loaned to Worcester on Jan 4 after appearing in four games with San Jose (0-0-0, 11pims). Defenseman Andrew Blazek was released from his PTO on Jan 4 and reported to South Carolina in the ECHL. As of Jan 6, Matt Tennyson, Melker Karlsson, and Freddie Hamilton are with the SJ Sharks.
The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is goaltender Troy Grosenick. The 25-year-old from Brookfield, Wisconsin went 2-1-0 and a .945 save% in three starts last week for the Sharks.

The Worcester Sharks kick off a five game home stand with two promotion packed games this weekend at the DCU Center!
On Friday, the Sharks host the Binghamton Senators at 7:30pm. Fans can enjoy $2 hot dogs, popcorn, and soda all night long! Catch the 5th annual High School Hockey Faceoff between the Auburn Rockets and the Wachusett Mountaineers before the Sharks host the Binghamton Senators at 7:30pm. Doors open at 4:15pm for the high school game at 4:30pm.
On Saturday, the Sharks host the Providence Bruins at 7pm with the first 3,000 fans receiving a John Buccigross Overtime Challenge bobblehead doll presented by Southbridge Savings Bank. "Bucci" will sign autographs from 6-8pm and make sure to arrive early for the 6th annual High School Hockey Showdown featuring the Shrewsbury Colonials vs. the Algonquin Tomahawks. Doors open at 2pm for the girls' varsity game at 2:10pm and the boys' game at 4pm. One ticket is good for all three games!
MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1301 AHL games - all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,637 games in the AHL and ECHL. Roy surpassed John Paddock (589) for the 3rd most wins in AHL history in the Sharks 3-1 win in Providence on Jan 4.

- Micheal Haley leads the club in goals (10), leads the club in fighting majors (6), and tops in penalty minutes (60). Haley picked up his 1,000th AHL penalty minute on Dec 13 and has also played four games with the San Jose Sharks this season.
- Goaltender Troy Grosenick has a 10-6-3 record in Worcester with a 2.83 GAA and a .899 save %. Grosenick made his NHL debut on Nov 16 and set an NHL record for most saves in a shutout by a goaltender making his NHL debut (45) in the SJ Sharks 2-0 win at Carolina. Troy went 1-1-0 in two starts for the SJ Sharks and is currently in Worcester.

The Worcester Sharks (13-13-3-1, 30pts) have points in four straight games after a convincing 6-2 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (15-12-3-1, 34pts) in front of 3,621 fans at the DCU Center on Tuesday evening. Travis Oleksuk scored twice, Dylan Demelo added three points (1-2-3), Freddie Hamilton picked up four assists, and Troy Grosenick made 21 saves in net for his 9th win of the season as the Sharks extended their point streak to four games (2-0-1-1). Adam Burish (1-1-2) and Konrad Abeltshauser (1-1-2) each had two point games and Greger Hanson scored his 1st AHL goal for Worcester. With the win, head coach Roy Sommer tied John Paddock (589 wins) for the third most wins in AHL history.
1.2.15 - Manchester 2 - Worcester 1 - L - DCU Center - Worcester, MA
The Worcester Sharks (13-14-3-1, 30pts) opened up the 2015 calendar year with a 2-1 loss to the first place Manchester Monarchs (24-7-1-1, 50pts) in front of 3,061 fans at the DCU Center on Friday evening. Willie Coetzee scored the only goal for the Sharks after the Monarchs grabbed a 2-0 lead at 7:24 of the third period. JF Berube made 22 saves for his 9th straight win as Zach O'Brien and Sean Backman found the back of the net for Manchester as the Monarchs improved to 6-0-0-0 vs. the Sharks this season. Troy Grosenick was solid in net for Worcester turning aside 31 shots in the one goal loss.
1.3.15 - Springfield 4 - Worcester 3 - SOL - Mass Mutual Center - Springfield, MA
The Worcester Sharks (13-14-3-2, 31pts) coughed up a two goal third period lead and eventually lost in the shootout by a 4-3 score to the Springfield Falcons (23-10-2-0, 48pts) in front of 3,592 fans at the Mass Mutual Center on Saturday evening. Worcester charged out to a 3-1 lead through two periods after goals by Bryan Lerg, Chris Tierney, and Evan Trupp before the Falcons scored twice in the third to force overtime. JP Anderson made 40 saves in net but the Sharks lost for the first time this season (8-0-0-1) when leading after 40 minutes of play. Marco Dano, Jaime Sifers, and TJ Tynan scored for Springfield while Kirby Rychel scored the only goal in the shootout for the Springfield victory.
1.4.15 - Providence 1 - Worcester 3- W - Dunkin Donuts Center - Providence, RI
The Worcester Sharks (14-14-3-2, 33pts) continued their strong play against their rival Providence Bruins (17-14-3-1, 38pts) with a 3-1 road victory in front of 7,675 fans at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Sunday afternoon.The Sharks broke out to a 3-0 lead as Riley Brace, Jeremy Langlois, and Chris Tierney scored for the Sharks while Troy Grosenick made 34 saves for his 10th win of the season. Worcester now has points in five of their last six games (2-1-1-2) and improved to 5-0-0-0 vs. the Bruins this season.

The Worcester Sharks (14-14-3-2, 33pts in 33gp) are in 4th place in the Atlantic Division; which is 18 points behind the 1st place Monarchs (51pts in 34gp), six points behind the 2nd place Pirates (39pts in 35gp), five points behind the 3rd place Bruins (38pts in 35gp), and one point ahead of the 5th place IceCaps (32pts in 35gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

*4 National Champions... The Sharks have four players that won the NCAA Division 1 Championship.... Gus Young was captain with Yale University in 2013....Travis Oleksuk with University Minnesota Duluth in 2011...Bryan Lerg with Michigan State in 2007.... and Adam Burish with Wisconsin in 2006.
*Memorial Cup... rookie defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser won the Memorial Cup in 2013 with the Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) and was named to the 2013 Memorial Cup All-Star Team.

*Keeping your hat on (Thanks Ballou)... Worcester had gone 263 games without one of its players recording a hat trick before Daniil Tarasov scored three goals in Springfield on Oct 26. That was easily the longest active streak in the AHL. The Sharks' last hat trick had belonged to Dan DaSilva, who scored three times in Manchester during a 5-2 Worcester victory in Manchester on Feb. 14, 2010. Freddie Hamilton scored the first home hat trick in 206 games with three goals in a 5:12 span in the third period in a 4-1 win over the Pirates on Oct 26, 2014. It was the first home hat trick since P.J. Fenton had one on Feb. 28, 2009 in the Sharks' 7-3 victory over Springfield. In all, Worcester players have recorded hat tricks only ten times in the franchise's 661 games. Coming Up for the Worcester Sharks:
The Worcester Sharks kick off a five game home stand with two promotion packed games this weekend at the DCU Center!
On Friday, the Sharks host the Binghamton Senators at 7:30pm. Fans can enjoy $2 hot dogs, popcorn, and soda all night long! Catch the 5th annual High School Hockey Faceoff between the Auburn Rockets and the Wachusett Mountaineers before the Sharks host the Binghamton Senators at 7:30pm. Doors open at 4:15pm for the high school game at 4:30pm.
On Saturday, the Sharks host the Providence Bruins at 7pm with the first 3,000 fans receiving a John Buccigross Overtime Challenge bobblehead doll presented by Southbridge Savings Bank. "Bucci" will sign autographs from 6-8pm and make sure to arrive early for the 6th annual High School Hockey Showdown featuring the Shrewsbury Colonials vs. the Algonquin Tomahawks. Doors open at 2pm for the girls' varsity game at 2:10pm and the boys' game at 4pm. One ticket is good for all three games!
